Q: Is Hong Kong becoming more like China? Or is China becoming more like Hong Kong?

The chicken or the egg metaphor?

The people I know in Hong Kong all say China is forcing its policies on them. I guess that might explain the tens of thousands of people who take to the streets to demand political reforms.

I have HK-born friends in HK, and visit the city quite regularly. Most of the locals I have met seemed concerned about the number of Chinese retirees who are going there to reap the higher benefits. The increase in Chinese mainlanders there is quite evident. They just don't look like they belong.

However, overall, the manners in Hk seem better than in most parts of China. There is still some pushing, but it doesn't seem as deliberate or directed as on the mainland. The spitting, etc seems to be minimised by laws that are actually enforced. HK seems to still have a better public image than China's mainland.

It is curious to think that the HK Chinese came from the same 5 000 year old culture as the mainland Chinese, when you see the vast differences in behaviour and mannerisms.
