I asked one of my friends today about that, he has lived in HK with his family since 1992.  Told me that for the most part, it has not really changed much.

according to the newspaper, 400,000 people joined the rally to redress their grievances today....i think the hk govt's inept handling of some important political social and economic issues has been putting hk on the edge.....and the lack of seasoned politicians like our former governor Chris Patten is another reason to blame. In retrospect, i was proud of hk under the leadership of british elites. After China's resumption of the sovereignty, hk has been governed by a group of mentally retarded.
i believe there are still many talents out there, but they wouldnt like to serve in the government to make a brighter future for hk.....

I saw on CCTV that Hong Kong and its people have greatly prospered and are very happy since returning to China rule.  And their fondest wish is to do away with the One Government Two Systems rule and return to the true values of Mother China's wisdom.  Only the greedy concerns of outside influences prevent this wish from being carried out and Hong Kongers are patiently waiting for the day Mother China removes the foreign filth from their streets and they can cast down the shackles of the modern consumerism that has been forced upon them by western slime.

And you know that if it is on Chinese TV, it must be true.

From what I've read, DEFINITELY worse!!!!! I constantly read about protests and grievances that the people of Hong Kong have with the so-called leadership.

"mentally retarded" indeed!!

All the times I have been to HK it is the same it practically was before the hand over a ablight a few minor differences but in all the same. The big question is what will it be like in 2047 when the 50years is over for HK and what changes will be seen will it combine to make a mega city with Shenzhen? Will it be apart of Guangdong or still be a SAR?

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
