Q: Hong Kong vs. mainlanders - why the hate?

If you read the news, seems like every day there's something new going on down in Hong Kong. There's mainland pregnant women going to Kong Kong to have their babies, mainlanders buying lots of luxury products there, etc.

But I mean, if I were a mainlander, I'd probably be doing the same thing. So why the hate?

Scandal broke out a while ago when a couple took a picture outside a closed D&G. Supposedly, through the window you could see the store manager handing some things to a highranking mainlander (or something to that effect).

Store manager came out of the store, told the couple not to take any pictures, that only mainlanders could.

Other incident: mainlanders potentially being given the right to drive in Hong Kong with their cars. Hong Kong's small. Doesn't take a genius to figure out what the ramifications of this law would be.

Other incident: as you mentioned, mainlanders coming to HK to give birth. It's gotten so bad now HK residents CAN'T EVEN GIVE BIRTH in HK because the hospitals and clinics are just infested with mainlanders.

etc. etc. etc.

If I were a HK'er, I'd feel pretty pissed and pretty threatened by the sheer volume of people swamping my home from all of mainland China.

On the other hand, I also kind of understand the mainlander point of view. They want the best for their kids (giving birth in HK gives them HK passport), they want the better products (buying luxury goods in China is not a good idea - always the risk of it being fake), etc. etc. BUT... if these people are doing this in the first place, it means they have money. They can pretty much afford anything in China already, so why the need to fly down to HK?

It is mostly expeculation on my part, but HKG residents lived under Western standards for a long time, and got used to them, and consider mainlanders to be barbaric in manners in many ways, and do not wish to be part of the Mainland.  That is my opinion anyway, considering my visits an conversations there.

In regards to mainlanders going there for goods and services, I have been told it is done because they get better goods and services there, and also better prices.  Plus it gives them "face" to have enough money to do so.
