I don't think the tanqin L visa is any different from other L visas, but I'm not sure.

This was in today's article on the main page, if you didn't see it already:

"From what the officer at the PSB told me, it is still possible to extend your tourist visa in China twice. Each time, it can only be extended for one month and it is "0-entry", meaning once you leave China it is no longer valid no matter how many days you have left. This is provided that you haven't extended the visa twice already in the same year period."

As I understand u visa is not tourist L, but visiting relatives L. The changes were in extending L tourist visa, the procedure for extending  L visiting relatives  visa is the same like before. U can extend it for 6 or 12 months with 0,1,2,or multiply entries (multiply is more expensive)

since 1 st September, the visa category is changed, according to your situation, it should be change into Q type visa I suppose, but also will see what is the local exit/enter administration officer issue finally.

as far as i know you can renew an L visa only one time and then you need to exit China 

i'm talking about the tourist visa though not sure about the family visit visa

For family visits L visa's are over and gone, You'll get a Q1 or Q2 visa.

I have read from other articles one to two times.   30 days each time not sure if its 0 entry like the person commented near the top, depends where you go.    It seems better to just go back to your home country and get it.   I have got my in America four times and I always get cheaper visas that are multiple entry, and longer durations of stays.
