It's actually a good way to pay for things when traveling outside your "home" city.  You can avoid the 1% surcharge imposed by most banks for withdrawing cash from an out of town ATM.  Normally, I stick with cash for most purchases.  The transaction seems to go a bit quicker versus extra steps of entering a 6-digit pin and also having to sign the receipt.

In department stores and proper supermarkets, we always just use a card. We have a stack of union pay cards, one is for shopping, and there is never more than a couple of thousands in the account. The missus can move money to that account from a computer/atm/phone, so it is easy to replenish it.

We keep the account low, just in case. never had any issues though. My wife is pretty vigilant in checking the account

It's better to use a credit card, because you have some kind of protection there.

Somebody cracks a debit card, they can clean out your account and you have no recourse, credit cards stolen you can dispute all the charges. Plus you can get points or rewards on it.

What's a shame here is that as far as I can tell you can't get a card that's strictly ATM, though maybe the bank is just being unhelpful.

I just use my Union pay card at supermarkets and some outlets I trust. I am using ICBC for this purpose, having SMS alerts sent to my mobile phone and also the ICBC App is quite feasible in letting know the activities on the card within seconds of usage. So far I had no problem with that. My Standard Chartered Credit Card doesn't work here. So the money in my account back home is of no use until I get back home.

It is very bad.  It is like eating shell fish, or gay sex.  I am pretty sure Jesus would never allow it.
