It is illegal to hire foreign domestic workers in China.  They used to bring in foreign aupairs and maids into the country by saying they were teachers, but they have really clamped down on that.  If someone tried to hire you, they would not be able to get you a legal visa and you would be in danger for working illegally at any time.

In my opinion, it just isn't worth the risk.

It is absolutely not true that working as an au pair in china is illegal, because you are not hired as a domestic worker. But I do agree that it is nearly impossible for families alone to get you a legal visa.they need a trusted agency to do it for them. It is not illegal because it is not considered a job, but rather a cultural exchange program that comprises language and culture classes. There are Indeed strict rules regulating this field and even a China Au Pair Association. The reason why I know this is because I work for an au pair agency that does exactly this. We promote au pair cultural exchange programs for young foreign people who are interested in Chinese culture and want to come to china and live with a Chinese family. If you are interested in knowing more let me know.

Is the Aupair providing a service for which they get paid?  If so, then they are working and it IS a job.  Does the Aupair take care of a families children?  If they do, then it IS domestic work.  And foreigners doing domestic work is illegal.  Foreigners doing anything for money without a work permit IS illegal.
