Q: How can I complain?

On Thursday I went to one of the local malls here in Baotou with a friend.  She wanted to have a computer worked on and while she was talking with some folks about it I looked at laptops.  I've been thinking about a new one for months now as my E-machine is 6 years old and has difficulty keeping up online.  I saw an Asus X43B for the low, low, price of 2999RMB with "free DOS" as the operating system.  I decided I'd buy it and put UBUNTU on it since I have been wanting to try out that system.  I told them I'd be back the next day to buy one.  So, on Friday I went back, cash in hand.  They put Windows 7 (in English) on it for me and did not raise the price. I did not even realize what they were doing until I got tired of waiting and they kept saying, "a moment please".  Finally I looked to see what the hold up was and saw the install screens.  Their kindness is typical of people here in Baotou and I am thankful to live in such a wonderful city among such fine people.  Thanks Asus Baotou Shi Tian Jong Business Trade LLC!

My best advice, if you got windows 7, is NOT to install the updates. I was warned not to, but I did it anyways, and ever since, I get treated with the "Your copy of Windows is not genuine" pop up message. Every 5-10 minutes. And I am unable to use wallpapers.

I got used to it, but it still frequently annoys me.

So yeah, do not update it. It's a big mistake.

I have spent most of Friday and half of Saturday installing updates and my favorite programs.  I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about going to Windows Update but it seems to be genuine.  I also went to the Asus website and registered the laptop with them.  I completely understand why you would warn against installing updates though.

I was told that the windows I got was genuine, but apparently now. The thing is, they don't give you some serial number or anything, so even if you want to register it, you'll have no other way but to pay for it.

If ever you venture to Baotou Shi, look me up.  I'm one of three American teachers here and we'll be happy to show you around this city, but it's best in summer.

You can get around the no wall paper problem, I update all the time now, I forgot exactly what it is, but there is one initial update that you should avoid which checks the validity of your windows, so you can find and delete this, then download windows loader, its pretty simple, try a google search...

I'm not condoning piracy, but the chances of them installing a genuine windows product on your new computer here in China are slim.
