Q: How can I sell wine in China

Since I have some friends with vineyards I was thinking to import wine. Does anybody have any clue on where to start, who to ask, how to setup guanxi, how to approach shops?

I think it'll be difficult to get your foot in the door because there are already a lot of people importing wines from all over the world. In Beijing, wine shops like Cheers are starting to spread like wildfire and their recipe of success has been very low prices and reliable delivery service. Navigating past customs, understanding all the taxes and tariffs etc. means this plan is only feasible if you're thinking in very large quantities and have some expertise on importing good into China.

You will need a lot of capital to begin with, unless you can find an investor. Try bringing in the wines and featuring them at a particular bar (with advertising), tasting nights or even a small scale travelling exhibition around the nicer hotels.
