i mean, i dont know any characters..
speak alot ,speak alot, speak alot , read , write , practice it alot as much as you can , move out from the cult of your own culture people , mix with chinese, say as bad english as much you have it just make the chinese understand on what ever you are saying....... in return keep asking questions , keep memorizing it ..... if you are having classes do not miss them....... sit in the front batch listen to teacher and her tones, and keeping her sexy lips not anywhere on her body........
make many chinese friends.......... friends for benefits.............. go for it girls or boys whatever and whoever interests you ...........
I think there are two aspects to this. One is practice with actual Chinese, and the other is self study.
In order to get good practice, all you need is a language partner. Some people will be happy to teach you Chinese if you teach them English in exchange. If you want better lessons or more commitment, you can hire someone instead. I pay a girl 100 RMB per 2 hour practice session.
I should also point out that dating a Chinese person is not the same as having a language partner. This is even more true the more English (s)he speaks. You want someone to practice with, and that's, like, the opposite of romantic.
As far as self study, you should get some good materials. I don't think any of the software I've seen has been any good. I had Rosetta Stone and that was sort of weird, I didn't like it because I want more explanations and reference materials. Go to an English language bookstore in a major city and buy some books on learning Chinese. You should buy 1-2 books with lessons and also get a dictionary.
A discussion of books:
I have a pocket dictionary by Lonely Planet that has a lot of phrases in it. It was great for learning, up to a point, but I have found some of the phrases are not what a Chinese would naturally say in that situation.
In March I bought the book Chinese for Foreigners (ISBN: 978-7-107-20694-8) which has a bunch of example conversations, with the English and the pinyin. The most useful thing, however, is that it has a concise summary of pinyin spelling/pronunciation rules - there are a fair number of irregularities, such as umlauts, silent i, omitted e, and 3rd tone changes. I wouldn't have known this had I not bought that book. It isn't something a Chinese language partner can explain, because their English isn't good enough! The lessons in this book are really just conversations, and there are a lot of words and grammar points that aren't outlined in the lesson itself, making some of it impossible to understand.
I also have another Chinese book, the Globe Chinese Method that has a variety of lessons, but it also has the problem of not thoroughly glossarizing its words. It does a somewhat better job describing grammar points, but not a great job.
I'm still searching for a good reference/learning tool for Chinese grammar. So far the best I've found is the Chinese Grammar Wiki
As far as word learning, I like www.nciku.com . You can also download plugins for your web browser (instructions on the wiki link above).
Hope this helps!
Consider years of constant practice and dedication 'fast', and I'm sure you'll learn pretty 'fast'.

Mate, seriously, you think you are funny? I call bullshit.
I am using the Pimsleur Mandarin, it is a set of audio lessons, quite good actually and I feel like moving forward very fast, one lesson of 30 minutes per day while laying in bed at night and of course practicing during the day with my Chinese friends. It is not the best method for sure but at least works for me since I do not have the time to visit a teacher or assist to a formal institute.
Study hard, practice, live and study in China. I know one if you need to know
