Q: How can we find out what's really going on in Xin Jiang?

We just hear the narrative from the Beijing side. What is being said from their point of view? Maybe icnif77 can help us out?

Not much in my Fukang! Nothing out of the ordinary, here. More reports on Chinese (English) teli about Uygurs and Xinjiang 'routes'.

I'm only 10 days in the Chinese time zone, so I often sleep during the day.angel

icnif77:

If you come here without any 'knowledge', you can't see anybody who's 'unhappy or happier than others'. No different than any other Chinese city. Even in Urumqi, it is no different. Only difference here is 'police car on the crossing is always accompanied by military humvee'.

Here is not enough, if you speak passable Chinese. I don't, but I try to respect different nationalities I encounter, with proper greeting. Tough cookie! I'm keep yelling 'xie xie'. Muslim is 'merhaba', but is tough to 'switch' on time.

I think a lot of foreign media has stories, probably not about all events there, and most likely being there will not give the full picture either.  Of course a lot of outside media is just parroting what Xinhua is reporting.

brother1818:

Well that's exactly my point. And every time there is a new attack then Chinese media come out with a new reason/excuse/accusation of why it happened. I just want to know what's happening on the other side.

Go to Xinjian. Really, that's the only way. Otherwise, you're just getting what the state media reports, unless some outside journalist manages to sneak in, which isn't likely.

Go to Turpan. It's a nice place to stay and visit, and you'll see the real situation Xin Jiang. It's ugly. Han milicians patrolling in the street, police forces, army forces, special forces at every corner. Seringue in the dust if you go in the smaller streets. Lots of propaganda on the walls everywhere, and in phone-speakers if you go in small villages.

Your best chance is in a Xinjiang jail I guess.

BBC World News has two undercover reporters there.

How do you know that?

Is it possible to read their stuff?

I live in north west Xinjiang and here in my city life appears to just go on as usual.

Occasionally streets are blocked off and soldiers can be seen patrolling around but that's about it.

What I do know is that, generally speaking, the Uyghir and Han people don't like or trust each other at all.

Most of the tension out here exists in the south west and that is a long way away from where I live.  Hope to visit down there before I ever leave.

If there's been a violent incident somewhere out here the only reliable way of finding out about it is to observe whether or not CCTV news put on a Xinjiang themed Travelogue programme, as the latter invariably follows the former.

I'll copy-paste this from my conspiracy blog:

Recently, there was a news report about the ETIM claiming responsibility for the Beijing terror attack.

http://www.echinacities.com/news/Turkistan-Islamic-Party-Accepts-Respons...

I searched the English wikipedia for a summary, but it struck me that it still hasn't been updated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Turkestan_Islamic_Movement

Was the claim not reported on by international newsmedia yet? Wikipedia is usually very fast to update politically relevant news stories. Does this mean the claims were only released within the Chinese newsmedia, and China didn't feel the need to expose their spin-doctor tales to foreign scrutiny? Because that's what I thought when I saw it. Shenanigans!!!

If you really wanna know, just go waltz into Xinjiang and get yourself a bullet to the head. Those Buddhist fanatics and Falun Gong Superstars will fill you with lead faster than a terrorist getting mowed down by U.S. forces.

icnif77:

What is the name of that video game, you're describing i.e. 'US farces' and 'terror-titts'? There's no 'buduists' and 'falling dong' here. Han (45%), Turkic speaking Uygurs (47%) and some Khazaks, Tajiks and Mongols. Most Khazaks and Tajiks wear T-shirts with Snowden's pic on the front…….'hihihihihhi
