How? Using their brains.
What do they think? They think badly of us.
My wife has a bad cold and goes to hospital, then doctors 'advise' her to take STD blood test, because, you know, foreigners are promiscuous disease vectors after all.

Best not to learn Chinese; then you don't have any trouble keeping a straight face. Even translated comments reveal more of their mindset than you'd want to know.

I'm in Henan, and I'm a 'movie star'.

How can I know what Chinese think, if we can't communicate?

Yeah, I know! I'm searching hard for the female Chinese teacher at the moment....

They treat me well, thou. I have a bit problem with drivers. I'm 'teaching' them to stop their cars, when pedestrian (me) is crossing the road.

I'm anal, because scumbags won't stop their cars close to the school where I work. We have cops present at two longest school's breaks, when road is full of teens.

Not being psychic I really don't know but I've lived in a total of 5 cities over a period of 11 years or so and everyone has always treated me very kindly.

It is different all over, I think the smaller cities actually treat foreigners better. Seems to be a bit of anti-foreigner sentiments in the larger cities.

Eh...  I spent a year in Changshu, a small suburb city of Suzhou.

Rampant, in your face xenophobia and racism.

In Shanghai, no one looks twice. Except  the beggars, the hobos instinctually flock like the salmon of Capistrano.

Mixed bunch here. Some are very friendly and polite. Others are xenophobic trash. The kids around me seem to be amongst the least polite. Chinese parenting, eh?

It depends to what extent you will be interact with your environment.
Also at the level of your Chinese.
If you cannot speak Chinese (or speak just so so) and your interaction with surroundng people will be limited just to talking to your colleagues and friends then why to worry what the rest thinks about you. You will have virtually zero chance to find out and nowhere the people will spit on you or throw stones ...
If you plan to interact with your environment more so without proper level of Chinese it may be difficult.
Provided you can speak Chinese quite well so you will then find out who likes to talk to you and who does not - exactly in the same way how it's in the West.
I generally find Chinese very friendly and polite towards foreigners. And those who are not I simply tend to ignore.
I suggest selecting the city more based on the desired climate, lifestyle and diet. Not everyone can survive in Sichuan when during winter time the temperature may drop to zero but there is no central heating. On top of that almost everything is very very spicy. But there are a lot of foreigners who have no trouble with that.
It all depends what are your preferences.

A:You can still skin into China as a non-English native teacher by holding English Teaching license in your home country.2nd: Your BA degree should be completed in a native English country. Once, you fulfilled these 'parameters', you qualify for an English teaching job in China as a non-native English sneaker with Z - Entry/Working visa with Working and Residence permit later on. See the last 'Answers Highlight' ---> there is a web link posted about 'requirements for teaching English language in China as a non-English native passport holder'. https://www.gooverseas.com/blog/guide-teaching-english-china#paragraph-item-63614-target

*English proficiency: Passport from one of seven "native speaker" countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and South Africa). If you aren’t a native speaker, you’ll need to be a certified teacher in your home country with proof of your English proficiency (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL). I'd say, Chinese will choose and look especially for a native English speaker at teaching of English Literature job openings. Posted job adverts for English Literature teaching are most likely from International Schools in China. Good luck! -- icnif77
