Q: How is the clinical research industry in China?

Hi I am working as a Medical Writer, and have a scheduled visit to China for work purpose. China seems to be a big market for Pharmaceutical companies, but I am not sure how the local clinical trials are going on in China.

Does anyone know how good is the scope in China for a job in clinical research field.

Thank you.

As far as I know, the majority of clinical research done in China is done by foreign companies.

I'd guess the problem that a lot of foreign companies have is that it's hard to keep the quality standards high enough.  The USA and European governments do a good job of ensuring compliance and safety, but in China you don't have the government breathing down your neck in the same way.  So I think the big pharma companies are probably going to have to pick up some serious slack when it comes to auditing or they're going to find that their drugs aren't going to get approved to be sold in other countries.  In the USA, at least, the government is far better at auditing than the big pharma companies.. With the obvious exception of maybe one or two of the big pharma companies that I saw do some ridiculous overkill auditing.

Also, in China..The legal system has a lot to be desired so any propriety would be difficult to protect so I think for that reason a lot of labs have avoided setting up shop in China for obvious reasons. The last thing any big pharma company that spends billions in medicine research wants is a competitor that spends exactly $0 in medicine research and specializes in ripping off other companies work and releasing a similar drug for a fraction of the price.

Thank you Sidicas for the reply.

You are actually correct. I am working for a US company. We do have Chinese colleagues, but I feel there is a shortage of experienced people in China and English too does seem to bother a bit, though they are quite hardworking.

I am still unsure how much do one earn in China with regards to salary & compensation.
