Q: How common is fake/counterfeit money in China?

I just found out that one of my bills is a fake... that sucks.

I am curious if anyone knows how common counterfeit money is in China? Has the government or any NGO determined how big of a problem this is here, or how it compares to the counterfeit money situation in other countries?

It extremely common (that's why people even check notes they get from the bank). As far as how common, that's one of the numbers the government wouldn't release, it would make the country loose face.

In my opinion, for us laoways it is very common, more so that for natives. Maybe because natives see a foreigner and thinks I can give him counterfit money and get baway with it, he does not know the difference.

I have seen 10, 20 50 and 100 fake Rmb notes all over. At ICBC twice using their ATM I got stuck with 5 ea 100 yuan bills once, and three months late with 3 more. I complained to the Bank manager, even called the Police, but just wasted my time, even with the Bank Guard as my witnessw that I got the bills out of machine. It is big business here, so I do carry a UV light and check all 20's, 50's and 100's notes given to me.

Of course, I am in no hurry, and I do think that if stuck with a fake one again, it will be my fault for being too stupid or too careless.

what does the UV light show exactly?

HappyExPat:

When you shine the UV light on the Mao side of the bill, upper side, to the left of center (right above the bill denomination number), you will see a design in light yellow or gold color. If you see it the bill is good, if you do not see it, the bill is fake and reject it.

this is the great middle kingdom, 60000 years of history has taught them to(do this sort of thing) at any cost in every opportunity and to leave human beings on the street to die, if you cant accept the fact that you will be screwed over or left for dead if something happens to you than you are just a dumb foreigner who needs to learn more about chinese culture

I've received fake notes from taxi drivers on many occasions and a few times from the ATM. You can't argue when you get it. Its really a loosing battle.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
