Q: How common is it to be re-imbursed for the cost of a Z visa?
I was actually re-imbursed two years ago. (University teaching job.)

Mine was reimbursed by the manufacturing company I work for. It was part of the agreed package (including the return flight to the UK to get said Z-visa)

The general rule of obtaining favors and perks in China is:
Don't ask, don't get. Probability to get is exponential to the number of asks.
All my cost except alcohol are reimbursed and I don't drink.
You shouldn't have to be reimbursed in the first place. A Z visa is supposed to be sponsored and payed in first hand by the company you work for. I never had to pay for anything, therefore I was never reimbursed.

I paid the fee in the Chinese visa office in Manchester (UK), got a receipt & then claimed it back through the company expenses system. The visa office wouldn't take purchase orders from the company which is why I had to pay first.
It depends on your company. At my company it is agreed on before I start that I will pay for half of the Z visa costs.
About as common as a 45 year old virgin in Brooklyn or a sober priest in Ireland.
