Q: How dangerous are these things?

My mental wife blows her top every time I wash clothes because according to her, washing powder in China is more dangerous than toxic waste. Now i'm sure it doesn't meet the standards back in England but from her reaction to my 'overuse' you'd think people around China were dropping like flies every time they spilt a little extra powder in their wash. So.........does anyone know, is washing powder here really that dangerous, or is she over-reacting?

Also, my mental wife loses her shit every time I close a window for the night, because Chinese pollution is so severe we're all going to die in our sleep unless we're freezing to death in the fresh (polluted) air. Sounds like a twisted logic to me, the air is one or the other, and anyway, it seems to me we're going to freeze to death before the foul air gets us, I can always open it in the morning to freshen the flat up. But maybe i'm wrong. So.........does anyone here know, do the benefits of having a constant flow of cold air through the flat overnight outweigh the need for warmth, or is she over-reacting?

And finally, the weather here has shifted from cold to humid and the floors are turning into ice rinks, so i'm turning on heaters around the flat because I don't want my kids to sleep in damp beds. Now my mental wife is going spastic because she's convinced two heaters running while the oven is on is going to cause a short or start a fire. I've asked her to ask the landlord what the capacity of the main fuse is, but she says he doesn't know. So in the meantime, till we can kick his arse into gear and get him to do his job, i'm willing to live dangerously and get to sleep in a dry bed. It's not like i'm leaving them on overnight, and one of them's about as powerful as a hairdryer anyway. So.........does anyone here know, is every building in China an electrical time-bomb waiting to go off if three or more main appliances are being used at the same time, or is she over-reacting?

  Cheers.

Hate to break it to you but you only have yourselves to blame.

Either for #1 marrying stupid people, #2 living with their families or #3 not having the balls to stand up to their BS especially with kids at stake.

Your distribution box should be fitted with rated MCBs (minature circuit breakers). That gives the rating on each circuit in amps. The wires in the wall SHOULD be able to carry that current given on the MCB.

The rated power of a device is volts x amps, so a 2.2 KW heater draws  2200 w/ 220v = 10 amps.  If you have a 16 amp breaker on a wall socket ring your total power is 16 x 220 volts= 3.5kw or thereabouts.

I am not an electrical engineer, but that's the basic way I use to work out loadings. You can work out what breaker controls what circuit by plugging things in and tripping the breaker. If the device goes off, it's on that circuit.

Erm........that'd be Scottish yer talking there, eh?

Dunno bout Martian but for me I just need to know where the on/off switch is.  If something blows up I'll be only too quick to blame the shoddy standards that apply to everything in this country and then head to the pub.  But....no pubs!  Hahahahaha.....

Oh, Sir, I feel you. we fight like this for years, and it is not overeacting itself, it is money. every spoon of powder, every minute of running heater , eat your money. I told to my wife zilion times, the money I make, I do not want to push into my arse but have a clean dry, comfortable spacious living while I am on this world. I do not like to suffer until my death only to discover, that I have saved some money but have broken health, watching my son have frost bites from staying at cold bed ... she is crying when she have to click on online banking and pay 500rmb. I say - thats nice, back in europe we would pay double ... but with cleaner air outside Smile

Hahaha....

Your wife must be from a small village. My wife gets a little nuts about those things too. I think it is for a few reasons:

1 - People actually died due to like toxic fumes in the (Co2 or something) in the old days because they had to burn coal to stay warm. If they didn't leave a window open... they would most likely fall into a coma and die. People are still paranoid about it.

2 - Village women are taught strictly by their grandparents to not waste any resources. Imagine growing up during the Great Lead Forward/Cultural Revolution in a village... not a pretty thought. Their mentality was passed on to the grand children.

3 - Villagers love to gossip and argue about dumb stuff. It's their only source of entertainment while in the village... so yeah.

Many of my Chinese friends are averse to spending money on creature comforts such as heating and A/C: things that make sense for a comfortable life.

correct me if i am wrong, but one reason I work is for a comfortable life crying

I was told that having a lower temperature in the room while sleeping actually helps sleep, but not to the extent of leaving a window open to be polluted and/or frozen to death - I'm not crazy.

icnif77:

They never, ever turn off the lights and heater in the School's office, when they exit here.

I don't oppose someone is frugal, but I think, one should be frugal all the way/everywhere, or not frugal at all. There's no middle way.

I'm in two persons office, with Grade's Head being other occupant. When I'm not in the office, other Chinese teachers use my desk.

Yesterday I came back to the empty office afternoon, and place was heated on some 24*C and lightened. Head was away from the School.

Maybe 'frugal' isn't right word. Why should I leave lights on, when I'm exiting place? It doesn't cost that much to leave lights on, but 'why' leave lights on in empty place?

it's one thing when it is someone else's (the boss's) money - then they will leave things running/on.

It's another when it is their own: then is it suffer in cold/heat

Yes, I understand! However, I find it very 'ben' to leave lights on when exiting.

I'll leave my key in (and lock myself out), but lights are always turned off.

My mother in law is like this. She mops the floor with just water even when cleaning dog urine. She doesn't like i when I put some disinfectant in the water (I sometimes add it when she is not looking). I think it is about saving money and not the danger, some Chinese people prefer to lie to strengthen their opinion. She also never uses hot water or washing up liquid if she washes the dishes. She handwashes clothes in cold water too. It is annoying because I must then redo all the housework properly so the cost is actually higher than if she just did it properly in the first place.

My mother in law put newspaper on the windows and then Christmas lights on top of those. I got angry and told her I bought her nice curtains and told her I'd help her put them up. She could have had a fire In the house that her son was nice enough to buy. I know they don't understand but really how ridiculous are people here? I remember years ago they wouldn't even use fans here. Their kids would be sweating like crazy and they wouldnt even care.

Guys, unless your women is crazy I have found a nice little cheapness hack. Just say shut up and do it yourself. They want the A/C on too but they legitimately feel guilty. If you take away the choice, they can enjoy it too. Now you are the problem and going to hell. Not her.

After dinner if there is a tiny bit of food left ill ask her if shes gonna eat it later. The second there is a tiny bit of hesitation i jump up and dump it. She will pretend to protest but its too late and now she doesnt have to deal with it.

After dinner i know shes gonna wash the dishes soon so i " prepare" it for her. Hot water on and soap in the sink.

If she sais using the hear or AC wastes money, I just say listen woman, if you wanna be uncomfortable when your here alone I cant stop you but i dont wanna hear that shit again when im home. I pay for it and im gonna use it. If I cant spend an extra few kuai a month to be comfortable at home dont you dare ever tell me you need ANOTHER pair of shoes. You dont get to pick where you are cheap, its one or the other, you spend money or you dont. Dont be selfish.

I havent heard a peep in years, now she got used to it and needs the AC on at night too.

Robk:

Yeah, I am with Mike on this one. Foreign guys rely on their Chinese wives or girl friends for WAY too much.

The more you rely on them the more they will feel in control. Unfortunately, in most Chinese relationships there is ONLY one boss. They can't do equal very well. It just doesn't equate to most of them. So if you just basically be a man and get things done... you will notice them shutting up and treating you more like a man and NOT like a little boy that can't do anything in China yourself.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
