Q: How to decline gifts politely?
A friend of mine sings at a bar and when we go, there is often an Old Chinese man, a big money old Chinese guy. Friends with Old Bo level rich. We made friends with him and he is a really nice guy, but he keeps trying to buy us expensive gifts - e.g. the latest iphone or Hermes belts and LV purses. Now while an iphone would be nice I'm excited for the day when I can afford my own one, I definitely don't want any of this branded stuff and more importantly it makes me really uncomfortable to be given an outrageously expensive gift.
So how does one decline them without offending???
Not entirely sure what the best approach is, but I do know that if you get the message through that "You're most kind, but I do not want an iPhone" then that will just be followed with some other items. The message needs to be "don't want any of your gifts"
Maybe say that good company if enough for you and buy him a beer. If he desperately wants to part with his money let him buy you a beer every now and then.
just thank him but decline politely, citing that it is not culturally customary for you to accept such expensive gifts on such a short acquaintance. Scan. has good advice above on how to keep his friendship if you want to. Personally i'd find his behaviour a bit creepy if you have not known him too long..........Does he offer expensive gifts to other foreigners?
Just point and yell ''snake'' and grab the gift, when they turn back to you, explain that you were mistaken, by this time they have forgotten all about the gift. Maybe they will offer you another which you can refuse.
