Q: How did China get so good in sports lately?
I have been watching the olympics and sports for many years now. I follow a couple of sports almost religiously. So I was wondering how is it that China has gotten so good in sports lately? In the olympics China will always hold the highest number of gold medals. Overall medals going to the United States. China has some of the top ranked athletes in the world including their divers, pool players, gymnasts, weightlifters, track runners, volley ball players, archers, speed skaters, and many more that I cannot think of at the top of my head at the moment. What do you guys think about China and how good they are? I understand there are a few exceptions such as soccer and probably wrestling but besides those few the Chinese athletes have proven to the world that they have some of the greatest athletes.
With 1.3 billion people you would think they could do better.
just because there's an nba locket does not mean china automatically has the best basketball league. track runners ?????????? what are you snorting??? they only won the most gold by a narrow margin becoz they were the host country and they won gold in sports where no on cares about. even north korea defeated japan in soccer.
China doesn't do as well as one might think. The best they usually do in global competitions is 3rd place. With so many people you'd think they'd have a large pool of super talented individuals but that doesn't appear to be the case. Sorry China. :(
China only won the most gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Every year before that since the 30's, it's been either the US or Russia. I only know because I did some research about it for a class activity. Crimochina is probably right, they only won the most gold medals because they were the host country. China won 51, and I believe the US won 50, so it's not like it's a big difference. Every country has great athletes, but I don't think China is any better lately than they have been before. Sorry.
I usually go with the current olympics. Have you been watching them compete as of lately on t.v. They won gold and silver for weightlifting in both the male and female divisions. Was it that or did they just televise the winners? I know in America the sports they show are usually the one's that they know the Americans will do good in such as Basketball, track and field, swimming and gymnastics. They banned softball because the olympic committee thought the US Women's olympic team had an unfair advantage because they won gold every olympics. Some sports I know China will always win. Those sports include Olympic diving and ping pong china will always come out on top. But the Olympic committee won't ban those sports. I think it's a little bias! I just think other countries should get better at competing in those sports. Bring back Softball if your gonna keep Ping-Pong and Olympic Diving. You can't say just because one country wins gold every olympic they have the right to ban it. Do they? I don't think so.
Canada had the most golds last Olympics.

So true, but I find most Chinese here have no clue that there is even a Winter Olympics. Maybe because they suck at them, the media ignores them (ok...they have a few good long and short track skaters). So many times when I would bring up Vancouver 2010 they were clueless...and looked at me with blank stares.
nevermind:
It is because they suck at them. If China won more than one medal at the winter olympics ever there would be an entire TV channel dedicated to it.
New Steroids and as far the olympics is concerned including professional athletes and government sponsored athletes (which amounts to professional) in the mix.
And even with all that, they cant even win the B ball games and lost to S Korea in October in the Asian games..South Korea is.a little country! I've been there, back in the day! Why is that Mr. 50 cent brigade, if China is so good at sports? Just sayin!

That's just one sport! That would be like what percentage of the total sports played? It's really low! It doesn't matter the size of the country it matters if there are good athletes. I never see DR of Congo win medals and their the 11th largest country in the world.
