Q: How difficult is it to rent a car in Beijing? Anyone tried this?
I'm thinking of driving around during summer period, and so want to rent a car.
Has anyone ever rented a car in China? Is it very 'mafan' or quite simple and not too expensive? Also, do manuals come cheaper than automatics? how big is the deposit?
Any other rules about renting that are important to know?
This would be for a week, maybe two.

Oooooo! I get to be the first to answer cute Pamoua's question! A friend of mine rented a car from zuche.com; you can go to the website and browse their cars. Various prices depending on model, starting from around 80 yuan a day. Manuals are cheaper! Deposit also depends on the model, starting from around 3000. I think it's pretty simple, but I don't know if you need a Chinese driver's license. My friend picked it up at their location in Guomao, but I think they have other places if it's more convenient for you.
You would need a chinese driving license to drive legally here in CHina. I believe you have to show them some documentations too. There are many places in the city to rent a car so yes you can. It shouldn't be that difficult!
Most car rental firms insist you have a Chinese drivers licence other wise they wlll not rent
Ive rented a few cars before I bought one. Here is how it works;
You need a chinese drivers license, China does not recognise your drivers license or international ones. If you already have a drivers license from our country then you do not need to do the practical test, theory is enough.
The only company that I have found that will rent a car to someone with a chinese drivers license newer than 6 months in zuche.com, luckily they are big and have a good selection of cars.
You can register a book a car online, however the first time you do this you will need to provide scanned emailed copies of your license, as you are a foreigner you will also need to provide scanned copies of your passport and visa.
Normally this procedure doesn't take long but you will need extra checking with some other department as you are a foreigner, (this might take a little longer).
Then you need to go to their pickup office for the first time, provide paperwork, hardcopy of your license and your debit card or cash, including deposit. (Even though this company is the biggest, they do not accept VISA, you need a unionpay card, or the cash total including deposit).
Once you have done all of this and they know who you are you can then order cars online and have them delivered to your house.
I would advise taking a chinese person for the first visit, its pretty complicated stuff and some paperwork to sign.
But first point is, you need a chinese license....
