Q: How difficult would it be to obtain a Company or University teaching job?

Greetings all,

I am just testing the waters and wanting to gauge more experienced ex-pats opinions. Ok, so I am currently in Korea and hold over 2 years experience with both children and adults. I am looking to head over to Beijing around August/September time 2014 to be with my girlfriend who is a student in the city...

I hold a business based bachelors degree, a TEFL certificate and will be completing a Business English TEFL in the coming weeks on top of my experience. I would appreciate any insight and tips that anyone could be kind enough to give me. Thanks for your time!

If you are a native speaker, getting a teaching job will be a breeze. If not, then it will be quite tough. Also, it would be advisable to get jobs directly through the schools and not recruiters and agents. Scammers abound here. Visas may be a problem though. Heard that it's not so easy to get it in HK anymore. It would be good to check with the school if they can do this for you. And prepare yourself for the culture shock because Korea and China are two very different worlds.

Thanks for the quick response! Yes I'm native, from England. Ok that sounds reassuring, just a case of persevering and applying. I have been there twice on small visits and was like a deer in headlights...you stand still you get swatted. Looking forward to the undertaking though.

Thanks once more.

With your degree, previous experience & TEFL you fulfill the requirements for an FEC/work permit. The only current issue you'll face is having to apply for the Z visa in the UK. Try not to use agents to find work as they sometimes take a cut of salary. Make sure your contract is directly with the employer. Good luck!

prepare your list of questions for any potential employer and don't be afraid to get things clarified: i always double check their answers

don't be deflected by their answers.

ask for photo's of accommodation.

the only stupid question is the one you don't ask.

Best of luck in your search

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
