into the trash or are there places that will take batteries back and claim they will be disposed of properly (and then actually thrown in thr trash)
I 'disposed' old laptop battery in the regular trash bin few months ago in Nanjing.
Apple retail store in the city didn't want to accept used battery, and my Chinese friends didn't know and never heard of place to safely dispose laptop battery.
I was thinking, I am few years 'too early' with this question in China.
You could put them in the 'gutter oil' collector's bin, no-one would notice.
Our apartment block has put a special bin for collecting them just inside the entrance. I saw the same thing at a local university - special designated places for collecting them.
The proper disposal method for any trash seems to be to chuck them out the window of any moving vehicle. Parked vehicle is ok too.

I believe biodegradable stuff is not included in what is acceptable to throw from the windows of cars.

I'm not sure about that. I've seen the odd banana and orange peel thrown out of car windows. Maybe they were just pushing their luck...you know how daring these rascally Chinese can be.
you cant find the right trash for used batteries in China.
