My brother in law is a Shenyang bus driver, and he had several weeks of training plus annual evaluations.  I know Chinese city buses are not always themost comfortable, they do tend to be pretty efficient.   (and I tend to be really critical of bus drivers, as my father was a trainer for Greyhound for 35+ years)

crimochina:

depends on the city nanchang/hohhot awful . shenyang/ guilin/ gz/ bj changtu (near shenyang) outstanding and patient with the passengers side note nanchang not as bad as hohhot

I think this is a profession they get pushed into when they develop cataracts. The limited tunnel vision ensures they watch forward and are not distracted.
To prove this I was almost run over by a bus in a parking lot. It started up and turned left while I was walking by. The driver never saw me. I had to run to get out of the way. Unfortunately for me I was not able to damage the bus enough to show my appreciation for his dedication to his driving skills. It was cold in Beijing this day, so I wasn't carrying my beer // weapon// message from a bottle.

Sinobear:

I think they are China's version of Kamikazi pilots. They sure learn to take off but other skills like stopping, merging or otherwise following the rules of the road are not taught (or necessary)
