Q: How do Chinese men propose in China, if at all?

It seems like the getting down on one knee and arranging something romantic to pop the big question is a very Western approach to proposing. Most of my Chinese girlfriends who are now married experience no such thing. It was mainly family pushing them to get married or a mutual decision after a lot of pressure from again, family. But do some Chinese men actually do something special to propose?

I have met some Chinese couples in which the boyfriend makes a reservation in a nice restaurant and they propose with a flower bouquet. Pretty much I see the same scene in the hotels restaurants although it is not so romantic or surprising as for westerners, I assume they already had it figured out somehow or the arrangements were made with too much anticipation. It actually somehow disappoints me not to see the surprise and happiness in their faces. I must admit also in this part (north of the country) people is not very demonstrative of their affection.

Bona:

Talking of surprise, let's look at this: a girl dates a guy for, say, a year. Both are in love .....and they are old enough to marry. Is it right to say the girl stays in the relationship with no expectation, what so ever, that the guy may one day propose? Because only in a situation where she didn't expect nor thought about it would the girl be genuinely surprised at the guy's proposal. In my opinion, the 'surprise' u expect to see on the girl's face is not sincere, not genuine, it's fake because I believe all mature girls who harbour wishes to get married must be expecting a proposal from the guy they are seeing. So I would say the Chinese girls u are referring to as showing no surprise are just being natural, just being real. Why should a person be surprised with something they all along have had an idea of? Let's get real with some of these things!

MMmhh...nahhh. I prefer fake then. In this area people will not even greet you good morning with a smile, they just plainly ignore each other. Real is not good I guess, I prefer the fake smile, the fake happiness and the fake caring then. If everything can be predicted the same way, we can all predict that our relatives will die sometime and of course under this conception our sadness would be fake as well.

A fake happy day or a real sad life? I must believe it is just a way people feel, intense or not.

I've heard of both situations, one with a dinner flowers and a ring, another having the parents talk it over. In the end it ends all the same way, permission for most of the Chinese couples, future husband provides a house and a car, gives the mother and father of the bride to be, money and then you're ready to go

I heard that you had to rub a bottle of Bi Ju three times and say "i want to marry you", three times, you have to drink the bottle first.

danielmarino:

After drinking a bottle of baijiu you can marry. Only if you are still alive.
