Q: How do heavy (weight) foreigners get treated?

My niece is considering a visit while I'm in Chengdu. She is heavy set. Will the locals be mean to her?

Probably no more mean than any other race can be. Any grossly overweight person will always cop the sideways glances and sniggers where ever they are. But the worst comments are usually out of earshot anyway.

Njord:

I disagree with woody, they're way ruder than in any western country and talk copious amounts of shit... the good news is they do so in the local language so she'll likely not understand it with exception to their pointing and use of body language. They do things here that people would get a punch in the head for back home.

yes , but if your niece cant understand "the language here" it wont be too much of a bother, but the problem will be the pointing and laughing. in the usa people dont poke fun at strangers because of their weight here they do, my advice is to sit down and have a talk with her (i cant say ignorant behavior because my post will be deleted for speaking the truth) but let her know things "are different here" people "are kind" in "different ways" then let her decide.
i hope you catch my drift i cant say "rude ignorant behavior"

but let her know everyone she meets is likely to be "kind and respectful to her and say nice things to her"

I got fat here, as in 30kgs heavier than I was back home... I speak and understand the locals and i can say many of them are ignorant! I'll dive into them after they make their comments and they realize I speak their primitive tongue they KNOW they were being assholes they do it because they believe we don't understand them otherwise they wouldn't dare.

Althoughb sometimes they may not mean to cause offense, she may end up being called fat to her face. With a culture shock in mind, I don't think that will go down too well with her.

If you live here and you ain't a bitter (C U NEXT TIME) then you're probably used to it.

I think she'll be fine. She'll probably get stared at anyway cause she's a foreigner so don't worry too much about it. Chengdu people are pretty relaxed and chill. Just learn to not take anything personally...many Chinese people (especially in Western China) have never seen people who are different before so they can't help staring and commenting.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
