Someone told me the toilets in China don't have U-bends in the plumbing and that's why the sewer smell sometimes comes back up and stinks the place up. I remember one of my friends a few years ago "sorted it out" by some combination of chemicals from the hardware store poured down the drain, but I can't get in touch with him, has anyone successfully de-stankified their bathroom through a method like this and if so what did you do?

I have a problem with little flies in my bathroom so whenever I have any hygiene problem I just buy a couple of liters of bleach from any large supermarket and pour it down. You have to be careful when combining household cleaners and chemicals.
Yeah, it is common problem here. Have also the bad smell in washroom, even we clean there as much as possible. the u-shaped bends they do not use here, and is hard to find to make own installation for sink at least.
My current apartment has this problem due ot lack of u-bends. Bleach works for a few days only and sometimes not even that long.
First, please get a pair of rubber gloves and a mask. To go buy the blue liquid toilet cleaner that comes in the white bottles. With a paint roller or brush, brush the tiles in the bathroom. Let it set for a few minutes, then hose it down. Next, liberally pour two or three bottles of it down all of the open drains in the house -- most likely the kitchen and the bathroom feed into the same drain. Pour full strength but please use a mask. Follow that with hot, hot water for 10 minutes. It will kill the stench for about one week, not longer. You will need to repeat this every week or so.

I just did EXACTLY that... twice. I did it yesterday, and the day before that.
Didn't help, but my bathroom smells like food. Maybe it's because I end up washing pots there since my sink is too damn small.
Try a box of Baking soda in addition to the bleach
just open the box and leave it in the room
change the box every 2 weeks or so
or we used to use make a solution using baking soda and vanilla essence to clean out stock crates after transporting goats.if it can get rid of that smell it should work in your bathroom
I am glad that my bathroom doesn't smell bad. it's always smell nice, We keep so clean and keep the bathroom window open when we are at home.
and also I like to put an air freshener in the bathroom,The smell is pretty cool.
one issue i heard is that flush and drain goes to the same pipe... not seperate... so even though toilet and even sinc has gor u bend or some other air lock.. still just the drains of bathroom floor is enough for the smell... they have got some kind of airlock.... but the depth is very low.. like 3-4 mm.. and u r not puring water on the floor everyday.. so its dry and airlock is gone... so smell comes back to the bathroom...
just my theory. still not finalised my research on this...
Buy some of that smelly tofu/beancurd and leave it in there. That's the top trump of smells.

Bloody hell, it's getting towards winter, having to crap outside because you cannot handle the smell in the toilet, could lead to frostbite in the northern climates!
I think I'd take the smell of ammonia rather than smelly tofu ANY day!

Yeah, that Tofu, man, when I first came her I just couldnt believe the smell of it, wow!! Apparently it doesnt taste anything like it smells, still not tempted though!
It isn't the toilet that lacks a U-bend. All toilets have a bend in the pipe, otherwise the bowl of the toilet wouldn't stay full!
It is all the other drains that lack U-bends. They all go to the same place (sewer, except for my neighbor's washing machine that drains out his window). You probably also have a floor drain, which is the largest source of stench. The sewer gas that comes up shouldn't smell like pee - it will smell like the shit of the Chinaman, which is twice as smelly as the laowai dooky.
I would wager you have some kind of plumbing leak if your bathroom reeks like this.
Thanks everybody! Didn't realize so many people already had it figured out, sort of....
Sanitize it clean the toilets daily and get an air freshner
If you are in a typical apartment building that has the sewage drain pipes on the outside of your building, there is a simple fix you can do.
1) Find a plumber who actually knows what he is talking about. (This is BY FAR the hardest step in any country.)
2) Have him install an air gap on the pipe that comes out of your apartment. This will let things flow out, but will prevent anything, including sewer gas, from coming back up.
Problem solved. It is fairly cheap (about US$50 is what I paid).
This will keep you from doing expensive remodeling to fix the problem.
