When you get job offers, google the name of the school and if you have them, the names of the people associated with the school. You'll often find others asking about the same school, sometimes you'll see negative school reviews / warnings - don't work at this school, they ripped me off kind of thing -  and sometimes personal blogs of teachers experience working in China (or wherever) where they talk about their work life.

Join the various ESL websites ( I assume there are still some operating, last time I looked at daveseslcafe nobody had posted anything for months) and ask if anyone knows anything about the school.

Also, ask the school for contact email addresses of the other teachers there. Legit schools usually have no problem providing these and you can get an idea of what to expect from the people already there.

Thank you. It seems like a recruit Agency. It’s “Chinaexpat.cn” have you heard of it?? There’s so many fraud websites, I’m just trying to be vigilant.

Stiggs:

No, never heard of them BUT a quick google search came up with this ...

https://www.reddit.com/r/ChinaScamCentral/comments/6lj7g5/fraud_warning_chinaexpatcn_appears_to_be_another/

No idea if there's anything to that or not, I get the idea half of those posts are probably another recruiter trying to put his competition out of business but who knows. One of the posters there called himself CFTU. There was a thing going on for ages, someone calling themselves the China Foreign Teacher's Union. I never understood what that organisation was supposed to be but they were posting on all the ESL sites for a few years and kept getting called out as some sort of scam.

I then tried to open the Chinaexpat.cn website and got a message saying my browser had flagged it as some sort of dodgy site. That alone would be enough to make me avoid them.

Once, you have the name of recruiter or potential employer, you can Yahoo-gle it and you'll find more info ... You can also add 'scam' or 'warning' to the name of recruiter and many things about advertiser will pop-up.

At Reddit post, you'll see the sentence " .... Chinaexpat appears to be scam same as eChina-tities ...", but this site here just advertises job vacancies. Anybody can post job opening here, so this website isn't scammer per se.

The thing is, you cannot tell if posted job is a scam or no until you start to communicate with the advertiser.

First and very foretelling scam sign is "... asking potential employee for any kind of funds deposit ...", i.e. either "you must deposit (usually small ...) sum of money for the travelling ticket or document processing, renting of an apartment deposit and similar..."

Requests for posting of any kind of funds, would be no different than if any poster here would ask you the same.

Would you post 100 Rmb to presented bank account if any of the posters here would ask you to do it, for this or that reason? No, you wouldn't ...!

Second sign about scam you'll see at the interview.

I never agree to the interview at other site but Skype. Reason: I know how Skype operates and I am not familiar with We-chat or whatever name of suggested interviewer website is.

Once, you'll see interviewer at Skype is in the dark place (room), connection is shaky, so you cannot clearly hear, these are signs of worry. Hired quickly (after less than 5' chat) isn't because "I am so good teacher ..", but because "I want your deposit ... quickly!"

I wasn't involved in too many scams while I was in China, Russia or in Turkey, but ... I left Turkey-stan because I accepted job offer from school South of Spain. School's name on the presented contract was the same as the name of the real school in the city. I was hired after 4-minutes of shaky connection interview, and I was asked for money deposit the next day. One day was for the employer's rented apartment security deposit and the next day for the travelling ticket. The route of suggested ticket was "Istanbul-Den Haag-Alicante". That route is like going with "the L hand to the R pocket around the arse ..", so I knew it right away, I won't meet anybody at my arrival to Alicante.

Next time, I was in scam was for the School in Iraq or UAE ... same thing happened, shaky, dark room short interview and "deposit monies for processing of working documents ..".

I suggested to both "employers", they can "deduct the amount out of my first salary .." or "I will give you the apartment's sec. deposit (520 EUR) at my arrival ...".

Rule is: "NEVER EVER DEPOSIT ANY KIND OF MONIES FOR ANY REASON TO THE EMPLOYER ...!"

... and as soon as you're asked for the money, run for the hills.

Was there ever an agent who wasn't dodgy?

icnif77:

I was working with 2 Chinese placement agents, who were both very straight. ... among '77' of them who were shady and lying dirtbags.

I don't have their contact details anymore, but I've always posted their calling numbers/email addresses at similar questions.

If you apply for a job that was advertised, and they try to get you to apply at a different school or location, this is a hint that they are scamming you.

Never send your personal information over the internet until the interview. Block out sensitive information before sending the documents electronically. Tell them that you will offer the real documents after the contract is signed and you are on loation.

The onus is on you to do your homework and asking all the questions. Ask for photos of the school, your apartment, and other things that are important to you. Always speak to a foreign teacher in employment and ask lots of questions. Be specific with what the requirements are and make notes to compare to the final contract.
