I don't!
In fact, I take "halloween" as an insulting mockery of what was once (and to some, inclkuding myself) an important religious festival, in which we remember, and respect, our ancestors, and where we come from. If we do them (and, in reality, ourselves) that honour, and show respect... we will be rewarded with a better life, and better luck (ie, 'treat). If, however, we choose to disrespect and ignore our past and all that came from it, we'll find our lives worse - possibly by those ancestors themselves ('tricked').
We should also not forget the number of 'witches' who were cruelly tortured, raped, murdered during the witch hunts and trials some centuries ago. (some of the cruellest and most horrific punishments humans have ever conducted on each other).... all for land grabs and petty revenge! And people think witches are 'evil'!!!
"oh, but we're just having fun!" Yeah, let me take something that you consider holy and start making fun of it, and see how much you think it's fine!
As for those who say "But the Day of the Dead"... doesn't have witches, only has ghosts to recall those spirits of those who have crossed over, and are actually CELEBRATING their existence - not just 'having fun'... and - THEY BELIEVE!!! As against what Hallloween is...
I'm not against dressing up. I'm not against parties. I'm not against having fun. But go do it in a way that doesn't mock other beliefs!
ScotsAlan:
Very good point. I have never seen it that way. I knew a few witches in the last place I lived. They do potions and such like. Its their religion. But even today, there are countries that jail, and even execute people or witchcraft in the name of religion. What you describe about the persecution and torture is still going on.
cub:
scotsalan, which countries religions execute and jail witches these days, do u know?

@sccotsalan with a idiotic pres the US has and as very ignorant they are about the middle east and willfully destroying america And with history repeating itself in front of americans lives what do u expect? With friieds like saudi arabia syria turkey iran iraq pakistan [all muslum countries ] and a muslum prez the US has and that he is by his actions who needs enemies? But then again with a idiotic moronic liar in thief as prez what do u expect from a ignorant cummunity organizer?
I put on an ugly face mask with blackened teeth. The only problem was it just made me look like most of the other people here so it kind of defeated the object.
I have no idea but I am sure Muslim countries didnt celebrate Halloween coz this is not a occasion for Muslims.
cub:
yeah i suppose u are right Thier ggod allah wouldnt approve of halloween i hear
Halloween is about as relevant to most foreigners as is Thanksgiving but because we are all lumped into being Western, regardless of where you come from, and most people consider American culture to epitomize/encompass all foreign cultures so they think it is a big deal for all of us. It is not.
I had to join the company halloween party because it was thought it was a big deal for me. It is a verrry minor thing in Australia and this was my first halloween party.
It appears many people here enjoy the dressing up (cosplay) element but don't get it really. And that's fine. Anything that brings joy to people and brings them together is a good thing.
I do not celebrate Halloween. I celebrate Guy Falks. Halloween is nonsense.

Hotwater:
Is he the guy who settled the Falklands? It's Fawkes and I'm with you......Bonfire night is preferable to me, not this imported American travesty of All Hallows' Eve!
Hookers and blow...it's deeply cultural for me,,,yes it was exceptionally special,
Traditions run deep.
