Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: How do you celebrate your nation's national day?
Yesterday was the CCP's birthday - in a propaganda bit to convince all mainlanders that it should be their national day and be proud of it. (it's also the one holiday/even that I despise in the Chinese calendar).
While most people went back home or on a holiday (or just got stuck on a train with 10 million other people), some of the locals stayed home and watched the big military parade on TV. Maybe that listened to or sang nationalistic Chinese songs.
They watched Xi and other CCP heads stand in front of a procession of tanks, missiles, uniforms, ships and aircraft (at least on TV), and all that display of 'power'.
And they probably thought to themselves - "I am Chinese. WE are strong and powerful, and so I am proud of our country".
However, back in my home on our day (January 26th), we go outside into the sunshine such at the park, beach or backyard (yeah, it's summer down there!), usually have a BBQ (usually sans shrimp )*, play backyard or beach cricket or footy. And, of course, play lots of Aussie music (cos, you know, it's good stuff! Go Spiderbait - you are fukn awesome )
And we probably think to ourselves - "I am an Aussie Aussie Aussie (oi oi oi). We are happy and have fun and enjoy our lives, and so I am proud of our country and what it brings".
How do you celebrate, and what do you think??
*NB: not all Aussies will eat typical bbq food - cos, you know, we have a lot of people from all parts of the world .. but they're still Aussies!
I would be curious to know if any other country struts their nationalism for 7 days instead of one day, maybe some dictator I don't know for their birthday.
?Any other country do a seven day holiday for national day?

Thanks for bringing this up. On and off I look at the world food reserve figures. This bit dates back to 2006. "The world's food stocks have shrunk by half since 1999, from a reserve big enough to feed the entire world for 116 days then to a predicted low of only 57 days by the end of this year. That is well below the official safety level, and there is no sign that the downward trend is going to reverse. ....Green Revolution: higher-yielding crops....between 1950 and 1990 while increasing the area of farmland by no more than ten percent. .... But that was a one-time miracle, and it's over. Since the beginning of the 1990s, crop yields have essentially stopped rising......We will have to find food for the equivalent of another India and another China in the next fifty years, and nobody has a clue how we are going to do that. But the more immediate problem is that the world's existing grain supply is under threat......"
http://www.resilience.org/stories/2006-10-28/how-long-can-world-feed-itself
Now, 2016, let's see what it looks like. "This year, drought in the United States and elsewhere has put even more pressure on global food supplies than usual. As a result, global food reserves have reached their lowest level in almost 40 years. Experts are warning that if next summer is similar to this summer that it could be enough to trigger a major global food crisis. At this point, the world is literally living from one year to the next. There is simply not much of a buffer left. ...http://thetruthwins.com/archives/global-food-reserves-have-reached-their-lowest-level-in-almost-40-years. It maybe worth your while to read the two articles. Heck, national holiday for China 2017......we may see something totally new. I don't think Earth is going to get cooler.......
This is the link for photo #2. It is a sardine-packed public beach. If you copy and open it independently under a new tab on your browser, it should be a lot faster. http://img.thesun.co.uk/aidemitlum/archive/02038/Crowds-flood_2038638a.jpg

Telescope, because of the 'quantity' of the people in zoom. I was thinking, this pic is similar as when you want to see (many) stars in Universe close-by.
I am not really familiar with photography.
There are no pics on your link. Just several replies on thread and 'Thread is closed' on the bottom, and Yahoo-gle search shows many web links, but I am not sure on which link your pic is. Never mind! I imagine something similar as 1st pic, except everybody half naked on the beach.

So it is the browser. Try Dolphin / Opera / Firefox. Don't download their latest version unless you just bought your hardware, these versions work on the premise that you have plenty of ram to squander. Most of their 'new features' are frivolous. It is a good idea to have at least one alternative browser as a contingency on your system.

2nd pic is open today. I saw similar in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl, USA, and when I couldn't see pic, I was thinking about Ft. Lauderdale gay part of the beach. Gays like to stay 'close-by' anywhere ... I've never understood, what's the deal ..... .
I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl for extended period of time, and I loved. I miss it dearly!
I use to run my bike to Boca Raton (N) and S to South Miami Beach with return to Ft. Lauderdale.
There's some 500 m beach's stretch (by Sunrise Blvd on A1A) with only men on the beach.
It looks very unnatural, even fokin' very strange, but the same as on 2nd pic.
Ft. Lauderdale is nick-ed 'Venice of America' because part of the land by the sea (E) is connected with mainland Ft. Lauderdale by drawn bridges, and so on .....
If you look from the sea level (E) toward the West, there is some 150 m wide sandy beach, next is A1A, 6 lanes road which starts in Pensacola (N), I think, till S. Miami Beach or even Key West (S).
Same beach/A1A set-up is from Boca Raton till S. Miami Beach, some 100 miles distance.
Otherwise, Ft. Lauderdale is very touristy town with loads of hotels&restaurants, either by A1A or in DT (Las Olas Blvd).
South Miami Beach is gay's HQ, but as it looks (2007), gays were moving to Ft. Lauderdale. Maybe just 'partially', .....
I miss Fl .... can't stop talking about ...!

hello, I'm back, had to help campaign for Trump in the states, China has 9 percent of the land and 20 percent of the earth's food consumers, so famine, starvation, and pure misery is coming. If America does not stop people flooding over the border, they want have enough food to feed their citizens either, maybe Canada and Russia will be okay.
It looks, all posters here are hard working individuals without too much-oo of celebrating.
Me personally, I usually work during our Nat-hol (pron. 'nat-houle'). They say, I am 'shining-light-of-beam' in my lazy city.

Straight out of the only good book ever written in China, "the art of war".
Canada (my part of home anyway, big country), July 1st, summer. very similar to Australia... BBQ, a day at the beach, or in the park or the forest or at the lake. Maybe a softball tournament, maybe a day of fishing at a crystal clear lake and enjoy a trout or 5. sing O Canada and maybe a firework,, that does not match the Chinese fireworks but they are fun. Certainly simpler to find a nice "quiet" place to enjoy the day with friends and family. Traffic can be an issue at home too, but really that issue is more like an every day occurrence here in China... not like the masses that come out of the woodwork here..
eat a cow, and a salmon and a pig ... potato salad and corn on the cob, cole slaw, and variety of salads and fruits.. and lots and lots of beer and a real variety of other alcohoic refreshing drinks,
I would be curious to know if any other country struts their nationalism for 7 days instead of one day, maybe some dictator I don't know for their birthday.

'Did I tell you or what did I tell you?' In Dec 2015 ....in English, for which you complained isn't spot-less...

If this has anything to do with zerohedge I'm sure it's trash.
icnif77:
Chart explanation:
''if one would 'enter/buy' around Dec 2015 @ US$1100/oz (time of me talking with you and you were misbehaving ...) and -----------> 'follow the red line and pick your 'exit/sell' date/value ....''.. pay attn. to 3 'touch-downs/bottoms' (approx. dates Nov 20th, Dec 10th and Jan 5th) & 'BOOM -up' always follows....doesn't matter how good English one can use.
It's called 'Chart reading', which is kind of difficult out of 1-y chart.
It's always better view on 3-m or shorter spread with various indicators attached, however shorter spread charts are interactive and can't c&p..
That's the best performing symbol/commodity year to date, what was my line to you a year ago.
In my mind, I was counting '1stTD, 2nd, ....3rd.', while you were 'jerking-off' in proper Englo about 'intrinsic value' and some other Econ.'s theory on Gold and not-use of it and what not......
Sorry, I am not big books reader, so I usually like to skip theoretical stuff, however if you imagine I'm hoarding bullion (I am NOT, Gov (or God?) forbid!) or trading posted chart, you can only eat your books, while I am holding my 'shinny' profit.
Couldn't find 'our' thread, so I 'looked into my upper head-aa' instead, after I saw your post today & 'voila'....
That's French....the last word.
mattsm84:
Ok...so because the value of gold as a commodity goes up or down you think it means that commodities backed currencies are more practical that fiat currencies. Sorry man, that's not how it works and this proves nothing.
icnif77:
Here we go again! I am show-off-ing and you're dissecting the thing again.
All 'theory' at mine is 'read chart&watch indicators' and .... few months later 'I told you so ...'
So, what is the reason Chinese and Russians are accumulating Gold bullion in staggering amounts while Ft. Knox is in the same time apparently empty? If by your theory Gold can't 'replace' anything, why are they hoarding it? What are they going to do with it?
I think, just facts about few countries (China, Russia & India) are accumulating bullion should give it some value ... Change is coming to the fiat world, IMO.
And if all tons of bullion in mentioned countries will be worthless, then I was wrong! I can live with that!
mattsm84:
What's the reason? Bad policy. Commodities rise and fall, but if your opinion is that a shrinking Russian economy is going to replace the place occupied by the US in the world economy just because its got the right kind of shiny rocks then you just don't get how it works. Sorry man.
icnif77:
What is the reason for bullion accumulating? I'd say, replacing 'fiat/printing at will' with Gold backed currency, i.e. as much Gold one country (or several, how it looks at the moment) hold that much fiat can be printed i.e. 'Gold standard'.
According to the article, China is recasting all of their gold reserves into small one kilo bars in order to issue a new “gold-backed” currency.
If you remember Reserve currency graph shows that US$ RC status is by the end (5-10y- can't tell out of the graph exactly 'when', but soon!) and only use of all bullion reserves China and others are holding is ... article above.
Biggest bullion holders will also have power to manipulate bullion price, but that's another matter.
I am not thinking about possibility of replacing US, but 'change to the World's financial system is coming' and China is leading the way.
Last week, I read China is taking no.1 spot in Universe exploration .... so much about, if they can replace USA.

I don't disagree that China is considering getting on a gold standard as a way of making its currency seem more reliable--but only in that it could liquidate its mineral reserves to stabilize itself--so that it can join the currency basket...but it is still a bad policy. Why? Because at 1250 an oz China would an astronomical amount of gold. Like more than what currently exists. Now the value of gold could grow as they continue to buy more, but even then there are two problems. First, the Chinese economy will continue to grow during this period which makes the amount of gold needed a moving. growing target to begin with. Second lets look at what happened over the calendar year. Gold grew by about 100 USD per OZ but its net volatility 315 USD. So we've got slow growth and high volatility.
This whole thing actually sort of strikes me as sad. China is trying desperately to get into the currency basket but refuses to do the things that would assure its entry--clean up its books and diversify its economy. This Lucy-and-Desi scheme is just sort of all that is available to them. Its never going to pay off.

We took over Shining's thread with another matter here.
I am sorry OP, but I have another interesting read on Matt's Gold's 'intrinsic value' thingy:
http://dailyreckoning.com/chinas-hidden-plan-accumulate-gold-2/
It's not wise for outing in BIG holidays/festivals. Some Chinese prefer to travel at better times to avoid the crowds. It depends. More and more young people are thinking like this. But China is a county built with family and community, people like to feel connected as a part of the nation. So they like to go out to 'enjoy' the crowd. It's thrilling and exciting if you have the energy. The culture is different.
