Q: How do you deal with the staring?
hi everybody , soon I will leave china forever, Im so happy. I prefer one billion times to be a poor dude in Peru but eating real meat and living in a 500 square meter house rather than be rich in china eating genetic modified food, syntetic meat from tyson, GMO eggs , potatos, disgusting oil for cooking . ha the ones surviving here are real warriors , my respects.
Im from Peru and on my country we have natives, blacks, asians, whites, mixed , so we never use to stare at others, also since is a bit dangerous staring at other men can provoke a fight and staring a girl without any intention can finish in a not so good situation if her boyfriend is around.
but here in china , the chinese stare at foreigners a lot, like that person was doing something bad.
in all china its the same, from shenzhen, shanghai to tier 5 cities. since I have nothing to gain wasting my time looking at the chinese, I prefer to look at my cellphone reading something interesting and at the same time listening to music while Im walking outside.
I can understand bit what they speak when they look at me
old chinese males : they try to inquiry from which country Im from, haha a hard task for them. since Im not white, not racist blood on my veins, half jewish half amerindian here.
young chinese males : they critique my clothes and try to guess what Im doing in china , also the say the word "han guo" a lot , I know hanguo means korea ,, but I dont look korean at all, who knows.
old chinese ladies: their tones so difficult to understand but when they se me , they talk about food
young chinese ladies: usually dont say anything, just keep staring me and trying to get my attention , since I dont like flat girls I barely notice them. but I had hear some of them saying "kan guo" .
well each ex pat experience its different so ...
How do you deal with the chinese staring? what do you do? do you feel confortable being stared the entire day for nothing?
I usually tell them (in Chinese) to stop staring, it's rude. In fact, I just did this yesterday on the subway in Suzhou. I said it really loud so the whole car could hear it. The guy quickly looked away and the subway car went completely silent. It was a priceless moment. A whole subway car of quiet, blank faces who apparently just lost face for their country. Noone else dared look at me until I left the train.

Thank you, thank you. My next performance will be in Xi'an tomorrow evening!
Robk:
I usually say "Ni zai kan shen me? Zhe ge shi bu li mao."
"What are you looking at? This is impolite."
They get confused... mutter "bu hao yi si" and then move along.
Why they always assume foreigners can't speak Chinese is beyond me... shouldn't even need to say anything, they know it is rude.

My thoughts exactly, every so often a weird pops up asking the same set of questions .
If its a guy staring at me, ok one look is ok but if he or they keep looking and looking or laughing, I ask them in Chinese: Are you gay? And for cute girls I ask them in chinese do you love me? If kids I just smile. Its a fun stress release game
I couldn't give a spit. You can stare at me all day. It doesn't hurt. Sometimes I'll hold their stare and make a retarded face at them. If it's a child I might try and scare them. If it's a hot girl then I'll turn on the glad eye.

I got a plastic surgery and a Lazar hair removal from my face to look exactly like Chinese... now nobody stares at me anymore ![]()
haha, I'm kidding... i haven't lost it yet!!
Your words "we have natives, blacks, asians, whites, mixed , so we never use to stare at others" for the people here all that is still a foreign concept, wouldn't you stare if you see a real Robert Downey Jr wearing a real Ironman suit with a beautiful underwear model walking on the road? I bet you would...
Well that's what I do, I pretend to be Thor every time I step outside my house.![]()
RachelDiD:
Did you see the James Bond movie where Sean Connery shaved his chest and taped his eyes so that he would look like a Japanese man? And the movie didn't even intend for that to be hilarious? I think it was Die Another Day. Those days must have been...interesting times.
Mateusz:
The weird thing is that there actually are white Japanese people (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9cTwzko1ZI). There is like no reason why he would have to pretend to be yellow.
It would be like if Ken Watanabe did a racelift to play a Brit.
I don't pay attention. If a girl stares at me it's probably because she finds me attractive, if it's a guy then he likely has confidence issues, or he is gay.
Now if they harass me "hallo! HALLOOOW!" when I am just minding my own business, then it's a different story.
It really depends on the specifics.
I actually hate small children in general, but have a weakness for them in small doses--so I play peek-a-boo with them. And you all thought I was just a curmudgeon!
Elderly--smile and nod. I am not going to chew out 70 year olds...even if it is a nasty old village woman who deserves a tongue lashing.
Someone who clearly just walked out of the sticks and is genuinely just exited to see a foreigner--I am friendly enough.
Twenty something city idiots who ought to know better--here is where the situation gets dicey.
If I don't have to tolerate them for a long time, I ignore them. Unless they are talking about me in front of my face...in which case I tell them what a terrible job their parents did raising them. If it is a long time, I roll my eyes and say something about nongs. If I am doing something and they are distracting me by standing a couple feet away and gawking...yeah, I do confront them. I just yelled at someone in my gym for standing right next to me and staring at my workout data.
Robk:
Hahaha... you must have scared the crap out of him.
Dude : "Hey guys, watch me pick up this foreign girl. Yeah bros! I am the man!"
*walks up to RachelDiD and gets yelled at*
His buddies : "So what the hell happened?"
Dude : "She told me to pick her up at 7pm and to not be late."
RachelDiD:
Haha, I glared at the person for 20 minutes before letting him have it.
Kind of the same as RachelDID overall.
It really depends on who is doing the staring and in what sort of context.
If they are staring and obviously look like someone who has NEVER seen a foreigner before. I usually quickly disarm them with a simple "Ni hao." That's enough to turn the stare into a smile.
If it is a young woman, I will smile and speak with her for a while. Chances are she wants to talk but is just too shy.
If it is a young man, I will do the same if it is convenient. If not, and he his gaze seems to be one more of contempt or something else other than curiosity... I will ask him what he is looking at and to stop being rude in Chinese.
Overall, I don't let it bother me too much and here's why...
Chinese are extremely emotional people. When they see foreigners they have an overload of some sort of emotion... usually things like curiosity, surprise, excitement, contempt (rarely but happens), or just interest. During this overload, their brain pulls a sort of Windows blue screen of death on them... and they don't know what to do other than stare. They forget about manners and get just too excited. If you even just say "Ni hao", it sort of reboots their brain and the realize they should respond and stop being rude (in most cases). Most do know that staring is rude.
Jews are not racist? They certainly are classist. For the record, what skincolour do most Jews have? Most used to look like other Levantine people, but generations of seducing blondes with their wealth and marrying them has lightened their skin and hair considerably.
Nothing but noble heroes and innocent victims of injustice of course, and anyone who says otherwise is BelievedtobelinkedtoISIS. And "Amerindians" were spiritual people involved in non-violent wealth redistribution raids and acuscalpture.
Seriously dude, from reading the weird mental leaps, accusations and rationalizations in all your topics, I start to feel sorry for China. You are an unstoppable force on schedule to crash into an immovable object. China will be unchanged after the collision, but you and whoever gets caught in the blast...

Yup, take a look at these. Years ago, one day I was in the library, didn't know why but this question, "ha, heard of it but what exactly is the Torah?" came up so I went to the librarian, who took out an OLD, reaaallly old, huge book from the archive section, the Talmud, translated into English. She said it was the only copy and I needed to show my id and sign for it, and could only read it there. I can testify the below is true, I saw them in that book. The Talmud is the 'law book' that governs their rituals, marriages....etc.

The Bible has quite a few mentioning of dogs too, not in a good sense, primarily in the OT, but one stands out crystal clear, in NT. Unfortunately it has to do with Jesus. Mind you, I have great respect for this figure and many of his words. But, fact is fact, this is in the Bible. Sorry, christians out there.
Questions: Who did Jesus call dogs? Why did Jesus initially refuse to heal the woman's daughter when she asked for his help? Do you think Jesus's 'because of your faith' is the real reason, or is it because the woman uses his logic against him by saying 'even dogs eat the crumbs that fall off the table', and had him ran out of words? Jesus like to use parables, metaphors. Who are the children? Who are the dogs?

staring is nothing bro , In america, australia, europe I would be killed just for my skin color.
DrMonkey:
@gatoloco In which parallel dimension ? We got all the shades of the human spectrum here in a 10000 ppl town, South West France. Not one mention of the fact that people comes in all shades, people meet at the summer festival and enjoy the music togther, mixed couple all over the place. My wife have yet to meet *one* person giving her the bad eye or bothering her in anyway. She starts to speaks in English ? No problems, people try the little English they know. Bigoted much ?
Lord_hanson:
Really, i am from the UK. I have met people of every colour whilst there. No one was trying to kill them.
gatoloco12:
hehe I dont know , I feel really unconfortable around whites. , maybe because Im half amerindian half jewish, (both races mass murdered by whites) but even if someone wants to pay me 10 million usd in cash to live in white countries such as america, europe, australia, canada , new zeland, I will not do it. thank sacred God I dont need those countries to make my money.
Lord_hanson:
You are a coward. Isrealis are not scared of Germans. Eastern Europeans are not scared of Mongols. Grow a pair and stop talking sh*t. You are very racist if you believe everyone with light skin is the same. Should I blame Chinese for war crimes commited by Japanese soliders because you know "they look the same." I bet most of your people don't think like you do, you are making the people of Peru sound like 'tards when we all know it is just you. I guess you hate all other South American countries too. You pathetic little man. You are too weak to create a future so you will cry about the past.
Just back from the States and the staring is annoying me .
