Xu is the leader of the New Citizens Movement, an anti-corruption group that calls for transparency in government and adherence to the rule of law. Reporters attacked live on air View Fullscreen The activist's trial is being closely guarded by Chinese authorities, intent on keeping the media away from proceedings in order to minimise public attention. As McKenzie and his crew try to reach the courthouse where the trial is taking place, a policewoman rushes out from the side of the road and tries to stop him in his tracks. The reporter manages to free himself for a moment, continuing to report the facts of the trial as more security agents in uniforms and plainclothes start to circle around him and his crew. McKenzie and his cameraman are then kicked and punched, have their phones and IDs confiscated and their camera broken. Despite the close police attention McKenzie manages to continue his report. "We are reporters. We are reporting in a public space," McKenzie pleads as police shove his head into the side of the van. The journalist said other foreign reporters were "roughed up" during the trial with one policeman admitting to him they were "only following orders". "This really shows how much China wants to manage the message," McKenzie said after he and his crew were taken several blocks away by the. "But in doing so," the reporter continued, "they betray some of the strong-arms tactics they use against journalists — including us — and obviously it's often far worse for Chinese nationals." The anti-corruption protester's trial comes amid the leak of records showing members of China's ruling elite possess massive offshore holding accounts, including at least 15 of the richest members of the National People's Congress.
