Q: How do you friends/family at home react to you living in China?

I usually get, "That's so adventurous/Smart for the future.",.....................or something really racist

No close family left, those that I'm still in contact with are non-committal.

Chinese family (in-laws) obviously think I'm wonderful.

Friends think I'm totally nuts, usual comments are along the lines of "I could never live under a communist dictatorship with such appalling human rights" etc etc.

5 years ago when I told a friend I was moving to China, she asked "Do they live in mud huts there?" I had to explain to her that Shanghai is one of the 3 biggest cities in the world. She still didn't get it. I pulled up a panorama picture online for her to look and see if she could find any mud huts lining The Bund.
