I love music but since I arrived in China I've noticed that I don't know anymore what's the hit of the moment. Back home I used to watch MTV or other music channels or listen to the radio while driving my car. Now I have no TV and no car and even if I had I think Chinese TV channels and car radios do not transmit the international current hits. Or perhaps I'm just getting old or not putting enough effort into it...How about you?

I'm old enough not to care about current trends in anything, and independent enough not to want to either.
Review websites, blogs and podcasts, much the same way I got my music in the states. I like indie rock, so Pitchforkmedia.com, Sound Opinions podcast and NPR All Songs Considered are probably my big 3. Also be sure to check top lists that always come out at the end of the year (from above mentioned places, Paste Magazine, Cokemachineglow, avclub.com...)
However, if you got your news through MTV at home, then you really have just been missing out on reality TV, not music. I suppose you could google Billboard top 10 if that's what you like, or maybe look at Rolling Stone online. However, if that's the stuff you liked, and you passively enjoyed the music that found you instead of you finding it, I'm guessing you don't actually like music in the first place.
Even when back in the States, I never really was current in music. I like what I like, which is a little bit of everything, from Classical to Blues, Country to World Beat (especially Celtic music). Now, I can add traditional Chinese (and some modern) to the list.
Right now, QQ Music is my main source of listening. You can search it in both English and Chinese, and they do have music segmented into categories. If you go on Soso through QQ Music, you can download a surprisingly varied amount of western music. They don't have everything, but I can't mention how many times I've typed in a band and said, "I'll be a monkeys Uncle" when the I got a hit.
Actually, I didn't say, "I'll be a monkeys Uncle," but close...
