Q: How do you prevent the red mist from descending?

Most of us have things that make us mad, heck, I used to have lots, but I found that there are so many out here, that if I let them get to me I would be permanently mad as hell. So I have learned to just shrug my shoulders, think TIC, and move on;

EXCEPT

for driving! No matter how hard I try, no matter how many times I say that I'm not going to get mad, the first time some asshat cuts me up or tries to queue jump, I am the most expletive ridden person you have ever met, what is worse is I have on more than one occasion become physical.

So, how do you control your temper demons? Genuine tips would be most welcome.

  For the most part I view people as children, and people in cars and on motorcycles I view as animals. People on the whole don't get me that mad because I think they're a bunch of kids, and how mad can you really get with kids? They're just little bags of stupid, you have to forgive them. Bags of stupid in charge of motor vehicles are more like animals; I don't so much exercise forgiveness, but I do try to steer clear on the whole, they're likely to do all kinds of insanity, and no amount of anger I expend will change that. None. It'll just give me ulcers.

I understand EXACTLY how you feel.  I can't drive for more than a few minutes before I am one hair away from being homicidal.  The only thing that keeps me from becoming homicidal is the fact that I normally have my kids in the car with me and I try to keep a tight grip on my language and emotions when they are around.  I don't want them to think daddy is a crazy man.

The other trick I use is trying to convince myself that by getting angry, I am only lowering myself to their level.  It doesn't always work, but the combination of that mindset and my kids keeps me from having a massive stroke while driving.

Compare driving on the roads with walking on the pavement (sidewalk, to our American cousins).   Both situations here are in chaos.   Most of the time the traffic is reduced to a walking pace anyway, so do what the Chinese do, take a deep breath and go for it, and smile.   If you do have a coming together, take a deep breath, count to ten and smile.   You will be surprised how effective this approach is at cooling a situation.

there is always one universal trick, that works...

If I'm angry on somebody, or somebody makes me feel really uncomfortable - I imagine him (or she) sitting on the toilet...

It always work, and as a unwanted add - sometimes I have to "use The Force" to prevent from giggle

this is childish i admit. but if you wanna feel better, make them angry too and you feel great. if someone cuts me off , i spped in front , cut them off and slam on the breaks, they freak out ,get scared and back off, i smile and drive away. works everytime.
