Q: How do you spot a foreigner?

I live in a large city with few foreigners (can easily go a fortnight without spotting any), but i'm sometimes surprised at being able to spot one from behind, and not just the ones with the huge behinds, sometimes it can be the most subtle thing that I can barely put my finger on, like them being three feet taller than everyone else. When they're coming the other way it's easier of course, they're all wearing dark glasses and looking angry, but what are the other giveaways?

Maybe they walk faster than Chinese people. I find it difficult to walk that slow. When I'm walking with someone at their pace, I'm almost tripping over my feet taking such short steps. I weave in and out and around people. But don't walk into me.

Or look at where the Chinese are starring and pointing.

Sure, the foreigner's usually the one being stared at 'or the one who's not staring'. Like when there's a road accident, or a minor altercation between a couple in the street, or when someone has stopped to scrape gum off the sole of their shoe, the foreigner is usually the one who doesn't stop to stare and take pictures.

Usually they are wider, and their tshirts do not have typos in the brand names

mArtiAn:

Actually i've been meaning to make a collection of those typo shirts to hand out next time I hit blighty. One day they'll be extinct.

I always look for them when the wife drags me to places they sell garments. But so far no luck. I would love a wardrobe of Engrish shits. ... He he.. funny typo.

How about "Ted Came Here" then it is up to people to figure out if it is perverted or bad English

I want one saying 'Ted came on my bear', with a picture of a teddy-bear covered in jizm, and a pic of Ted with one thumbs up saying, "Yep....I did!.........I jizzed on the bear's face!"

  That would make me happy.

Na, I'll stick with my original idea, I just don't know if I can afford that many T-shirts.

I'm in Guangzhou today, I'd say ride the subway and look for anyone taller than 170 cm, there's a strong chance that tall person is a foreigner [I'm 194 cm haha].

WARNING: racist comment alert ! I can spot a foreigner - any shape or size from the way they walk. Most local people i have seen tend to shuffle along whereas ex-pats stride to some purpose.

thats not Racist , saying that Chinese don't have a purpos , Now that is racist

That *is* a big difference.  Chinese girls I know actually make jokes about that.

It also can't be racist unless China is a race.

Is it racist to claim that Canadians like hockey?

my dumb-ass has been f'n off in se Asia for sth like 11 years now,,,, mostly in locales where whiteys (yep, I'm about as whitey as whitey can get(German,British,US heritage))are few and far between (except my stint in SZ), so, weiguoren, laowai jump out at me,,,, not sure how I notice,,,, but darn sure do notice...  what always freaks me out and has me realizing I have early onset alzheimers is that I wonder wtf are they doing here ??  seems weird to me to see whiteys wandering around Asia,,, lol... guess that damn 'Lonely Planet' book did what it set out to do.....

but on the other hand I say , good on 'em,,,  travel, see the world,, break away from the beaten path....   good on ya...  welcome to the real world.
