It depends on the woman.

Usually they are seen not important as guys that is why you see gender imbalance.

Also Chinese guys have more wealth than woman.

If the family has a son and daughter, they will buy a apartment for the guy first.

So the result is Gold diggers Chinese woman but of course not all of them are like that.

It depends.

I find overall, Chinese women, to be much more capable and intelligent than Chinese men.. They have better manners, but some Chinese women are insane and WAY TOO emotional.

You get a mixed bag like you would in any country I suppose but if I had to compare Chinese males with females... on a neutral scale... Chinese females are superior. But that's not how Chinese society perceives them. Boys and men are given preference because they pass on the family name and are seen as "better investments".

If more Chinese females were in charge... Chinese could boast 5000 years of culture with pride and probably be more advanced than they are now.

Strawberry66:

I don't think Chinese women are smarter. Many of them cant make good decision and too emotional. Each gender just has their own advantages like one mate just said on my post.

@strawberry: Chinese men generally can't do better though because they're trying to hard to impress people whose opinions shouldn't matter to people of consequence in the first place.

I'm not disagreeing with what you say about women being emotional and unable to make good decisions as a result. The problem is that in China, this emotional immaturity is left unchecked. I have a Chinese niece and when I look after her I do all I can to get that whininess and sycophantic freeloading mentality out of her as best I can.

If I had a nephew I'd teach him to be a proper man and not give a damn what a bunch of crusty, dated gerontos think about the insignificant crap which they remain pre-occupied with well into their dotage.

What you're describing are impediments to rationality which proper education is supposed to remove, but doesn't here because the education ain't proper, unfortunately.

Robk:

@strawberry - It depends on the woman, but that is EXACTLY what most Chinese men want women to think to keep them in check.

The truth is Chinese women are generally more tolerant, better mannered, a lot more patient, kind, considerate, caring, open-minded, curious and the list goes on.

TV Dramas and Chinese men want Chinese women to act dumb and like a immature child so they can control them or feel superior to them. If Chinese women stopped acting like that, you would see that they are far superior to the hyper insecure Chinese male. Chinese women are far more brave as well. When I see Chinese women get into fights (and they do) they usually try to fight 1v1 or something within that realm... when Chinese males get into fights... they call all their friends and it is 10-15 v 1.

Thumbs up!

I swear sometimes I've held back on walking into a room because I think my friend is watching a porn movie or something, but it's a drama featuring a woman throwing a big fit or just letting out those horrible little yelps that they all seem to do on the shows here.

Surely no woman with integrity could conjure up a character like that?

I always respectfully disagree with that comment when I hear people say it, knowing full well I used to think so too.

I work with some seriously smart, capable people of both genders. If anything I would say the two people at the office who I believe are the smartest are both guys.

My hunch is that a lot of expats just kinda anti-select themselves out of contact with smart local guys. Especially teachers because capable male students go into STEM fields not usually english. Also the women in general are going to be nicer to expat guys.

I know theres this stereotype of the nerdy local guy playing online games at home all day, but I don't have any less respect for him than the unemployed girl hanging out at the nice malls all day looking at clothing/jewellery. Just because they might flirt with me doesn't make them any more capable people.

Chinese women have acquired a lot of power with the gender imbalance (before they had none, zero, nothing, it's that simple), with so many desperate men out here each woman has a large choice and can pick the best man for herself, she can make him spend his hard earned money on her and if he doesn't want there will be for sure another desperate man who will. Women have become a rarity in today's China, they can require from the man to buy them an apartment and a car before getting married and most local men will accept to do so because it had become so difficult for young Chinese men to find girlfriends nowadays.

In countries without gender balance issues women can't ask upfront a man to buy them an apartment because most men will laugh and find another girlfriend.

China doesn't have gender equality but each gender has massive advantages over the other, men can make more money, more easily, but women can almost force those desperate men to spend that money on them.

Strawberry66:

Good point :) Chinese women usually live life with less pressure. But why you can be so rude and shallow when sometimes you can make good point?

In my opinion Chinese women are much smarter than Chinese men, but they do sometimes get stuck on silly things. Closer to home I treat my GF as my friend and equal, and will not make major decisions without consulting her (although I sometimes go ahead anyway).  At first she found it strange, but has now grown into the role and this has made us really close.

Women's social status in China?

Well, I tend to see everyone as equal, but if you are asking what female Chinese society thinks of women's status.... maybe this:

At the top are the top female politicians. Next the top business women, Then the wives of the richest men, the move stars, the pop singers, the mamma sans, the prostitute done well...... all the way down to the homeless woman living in the gutter and eating from bins.

It's difficult to define how any individual sees the status of other people.  And to an extent, the status of an individual is often down to how that person feels about herself.

For example, a while ago there was a young woman called Vicky posting here. She was always going on about herself, about how clever she is, how good looking she is. I got the definite impression she was trying to use her sexuality to get ahead. To get a jump start, so to speak, by sticking her ass out and shouting to the world to "look at what I have !!!!!"

Personally, I would rate her status as below that of an auntie street cleaner.  But that's just me and my silly socialist opinions.

Have a look through some of the old threads Strawberry, and tell us if you agree?

wink

laowaigentleman:

Those aren't socialist opinions, mate. I'm a socialist too, but most tories I know would rate her pretty low too.

It's those neo-liberal apologists who're impressed by chutzpah.

Who said the golden mean between two extremes was moderate? Not I... wink

I really not value those fake personality on this site by the way.You know who I am talking about. You some married men come to site to cheat your wife and even lied to be single. And for someone just called Vicky an attention whore,I suppose you are a shallow guy comes to China and starting insulting and calling ppl bad name.I dont think people like you is really having good manners nor attractive. You dont even know how to respect women.Well,I have seen lots of bad foreign quality in China,I am not surprised by your quality eaither. Just had a old member used on echinacties told he thinks there are lots of bad quality foreigners and he deleted his account on it.Hmmm..He is right.

I dont doubt that Vicky is a nice person. Obsessed with her bottom tho. That and how to make lots of money for the least amount of effort. Street cleaners, on the other hand just get on with what they do. And some have very nice bottoms, attractive smiles, and patient caring personalities. The latter puts them high up in my status rating. And why cant we judge? Your question asked us to judge the treatment of women in Chinese society.

Ok.Lets put things this way about what job is more worthy to get the money the person deseved. I myself is a business trader works for corporate.I had been told by workers in the factory that I make money too easily with least effort compares to them. But when I asked them to repace my least effort job in office, no one speaks. I studied hard on English and finance when they were not.Do a person likes me and Vicky make money with least effort?I don't think so. This society needs diffrent skills to make work goes on and provid what we want. You may see street cleaners do hard work, but those jobs are not highly skilled and everyone can do it.But a finance trader or some other office jobs are not everyone can do it. The rule in the market is when the goods are rare, the price goes up. Grow up,boy.

So strawberry. You have answered your own question. You, as a Chinese woman, rate your status in society by your money earning power. But status is much more than that in a just and equal society. Do you treat street sweepers with disdain because you earn more than them?

It is just your own small mind to think I rank myself high because I make much more than street cleaner does.I myself treat ppl never based on how much they make.I respect ppl who doesnt spit and shit in the street, ppl who will not afraid to say a thank you and sorry, ppl would like help another people when they are in need, ppl who are not afraid to speak with their soul to defend the justy.,etc It has nothing to do with money.I rank myself higher as I think I have better quality in my soul compares to many ppl.

Ther'e's good reason many seek foreign guys...

Could you imagine how a Chinese Jane Austen or a George Eliot would fare in China?

I can understand why Chinese men like their women young and dumb. If a woman of the calibre of Jane Austen sat down to dinner with a group of howling, spitting and ganbei semaphoring Chinese businessmen, she'd produce the type of social satire that would put PG Wodehouse and Evelyn Waugh's writings to shame.

The reaction of Caliban to seeing his face in the glass would pale in comparison to the response of the average Chinese man in such a portrayal.

Not that they read anything except captions under-pinning pictures of bath soaps and other people's dinners on Weibo, of course.

dongbeiren:

Chinese Jane Austen would remain in obscurity because she would be ignored and probably never even published

I think only the Chinese themselves are obsessed with status (called 'face'), so i have no opinion on this, there are more important things to thing about.

a good person is a good person regardless of their job, salary or family background.

a good person is one who usually does not feel the need to compare themselves to others in order to feel happy.

an a**-h*** is an a**-h*** is an a**-h*** regardless if they are earning 5,000 RMB a month or 50,000, regardless of gender, or of a 'high status' or a wealthy social background.

Strawberry66:

Dont make Chinese look all bad and you foreigners look good.We all know what quality we have seen many foreigners in China. It is how you come to China to throw bad name calling all around? Why not go back to your own superior western country when you are saying only Chinese have the status? Grow up child.Let me tell you social status are everywhere.Sometimes social status means bad, like some rich ppl look down on poor ppl.Sometimes social status are good like men and women should be respected at the same way.You think only China has status, status can mean lots of things, unless you insult your own country dont give women social status like men have,I dont mind you say it as it is ur own country.lmao

the question was asking for an opinion.

Each of the replies posted so far were opinions.

my opinion is social status? - it is irrelevant to me.

most of the regular posters on this site seem to be good people, regardless if I agree with them or not.

their 'status'? I have no idea and i don't care. Equally the status of the people i meet and work with day to day - it is irrelevant. character is more important. IMO  wink

FYI, the name laowaigentleman is intended ironically. I am a complete pleb.

I inherited my pleb status from my father who is descended from a long line of plebs originating in Magdeburg in Germany before migrating to England around the time of the ascent of the Hanseatic League.

I am proud of this heritage, as without plebs malls and television dramas would not exist and the prosperity (or prepospererity) which we now enjoy would not be possible.

China is in essence a society dominated by female VALUES.

Safety and stability is paramount. Morality and fairness is sacrificed as a matter of course. Emontional appeals supercede the rules.

If you have child-bearing hormones dictating what is important in life, this might just be the ideal society to you.

Women's social status in China is "high value essential commodity"; the men are burdened with what little responsibility people are expected to take.

The feminist movement in the West started after women experienced the ability to earn their own MONEY working in war factories. Before then, the passive gender wasn't particularly interested in improving society for the betterment of all.

Women in China can already make their own money, but aren't expected to. The men are obligated to provide lavishly to their women. Will women in China rise up in outrage over continual objectification? Don't hold your breath.

i'm aware it's bordering on sexism, but i was raised by a single feminist mother if that makes a difference. the two genders have their strengths and weaknesses, and men need women juat as much to remind them to think of safety before going overboard in the quest for justice. there are many things women master that men simply can't do. i couldn't simultaneously hold a baby and eat with chopsticks if my life depended on it. it matters when you have 2 young babies to care for.

Yeah I agree, it's kinda silly that it's taboo to talk about differences between the sexes.

I think were still kind of in a transition phase from the days of white male supremacy and BS scientific racism etc where now certain people can take advantage of sensitivity to inclusiveness to shut down conversation that doesn't support their agenda. And that's bad.

But eventually we'll get to a point where rational discussion of legitimate differences is possible.
