I mean the 01-Jan new year eve, not Chinese New Year. Are there big events organized in the city somewhere?

Yes there sure are...wouldn't be as big as the Chinese New Year but they would celebrate 01 Jan new year eve. The usual fireworks and a celebration at a nice fancy restaurant with friends.... http://www.clubzone.com/nye1/beijing-new-years-eve.html
