Are you a native English speaker? If yes you can find so easily even if you are nearly 60, you might even be able to teach Spanish, French or else, I have seen ads going like "Native German teacher needed in Shenzhen. American, Canadian, UK, Australia, New Zealand passport holders only", showing the mindblowing ignorance or narrow mind of Chinese people. And when you let them know about their mistake they stop talking to you, like 12 years old girls.
Phew! I'm 57 most certainly NOT an old man. However lately I do find it extremely difficult to obtain a teaching position. Maybe it's just Wuhan a I am limited my wife refuses to relocate. I am a British Mechanical Engineer, Bio Medical R&D, and Rolls Royce. Speaking French and decent Spanish, Business Management and Development HND, and several others. I obtained the CELTA ESOL certificate in 2007. No smoking - drinking and fit. But jobs are null and void. Unless they want you to work illegally, which for me is big NO NO. Don't want anyone having control over me here.

You worked at ... Rolls Royce?!?! Rolls Royce? Well done, sir.
I cannot imagine why you're having difficulty, but I wish you better luck in the future.

Have you thought about starting your own "little" English school? If your wife is Chinese it will be easier to do and cost a lot less in paperwork/business fees...
You only need a couple of students to get the ball rolling..

I would start a business. Export back to your own country. Start small, send a box of stuff to your friend and have him sell it on Craigslist and split profits 50/50. Quick easy and under the table. Also shipping to rest of the world from china is dirt cheap. Otherwise China doesnt seep to respect older workers as other countries do...
