Q: How does the price of wine in China compare to the price in Western countries?
I am bringing some wine when I return from Australia at the request of a good Chinese friend. They have made a special request for "Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon" as it is quite prestigious (apparently) in China. It is also in short supply within Australia but it can be found and purchased if this is done quickly as they release certain vintages from time to time. I have previously purchased 6 bottles and given them 2 at a time to business associates of my Chinese friends at their request when they visit Australia. My Chinese friend is not a wine drinker but has heard of this wine from others and as he is a successful business person I guess he plans to use the wine as gifts rather than drink it himself. Happy to help him out and will have the added benefit of some increase in Guanxi for myself and my friend.
As I am not a wine buff(strictly a beer man) I have read up on it and it says that the 2005, 2006 vintages are available but in very limited supply, are good and sell for approx $230 Aussie (close to 1500RMB) per bottle. Other prior 2000 are also available but sell for $350 plus.
It matters little to `my friend what these cost in China as they are for gifts and like most Chinese he is more interested in their prestige. But out of my own curiosity I am wondering does anyone have any idea how much this wine would be worth in China or can any of you check with a local fine wine store or on the net as to its price.
It will be at least double the price abroad, since the import duty is almost 100 % of cost. There is a limitation on how many bottles you can bring in with you, either 1 or 2, depending from which country you arrive.
Oner of my favorite wines is a dry red Cabernet Sauvignon, from France. In USA sells in the range of 9 to 12 US dollars, here is 180 Rmb, which is about $ 28.50
Wine is incredibly overpriced due to taxes on foreign importations. If you are happy to drink Chilean wine, where a FTA exists between the countries, then you can find cheaper alternatives.
