Q: How easy (or difficult) is it for a Chinese person to live in Taiwan?

This is just a theoretical question, although I'm sure there are some who have done this. Is it easier for a Chinese person to get a visa to Taiwan than other countries? Is it easy for them to adjust to the Mandarin and characters used there? How would they be treated by the locals? I know that perhaps no one here really has an answer to these questions, but if you do, please let me know.

Chinese can go to Taiwan as member of the group, for 8 days per year. If mainlander has relatives in Taiwan, it helps too, but I am sure not too much.

Few years ago, I intended to work in Taiwan, and I was at the London's Taiwanese CuItural Center (Embassy), getting info about visas and restrictions for mainland Chinese in Taiwan.

Taiwan was much more restricted even for Westerners than China was at that time (2009), so I am sure mainlanders today cannot free travel and stay in Taiwan or anywhere else for that matter.

In order to get Taiwanese tourist visa into my EU passport, I was required to come in person to Embassy in London.

Contrary to Taiwan, I received Chinese 60 days L visa by mail.

I am not sure about how Mainlanders are treated in Taiwan, because I changed my mind to work in Taiwan (with my Chinese GF), and opted for easy Chinese tourist visa by mail instead.

As the above poster said Chinese can only go there with a tourist group.

I think they can go there alone the second time though, but don't count on it.

Only way to get around the tour group rule is if they have had a 3rd countries visa for 1 year. Then they can get a normal tourist visa for Taiwan.

About the mandarin characters there: I am fairly sure they use the same simplified as in mainland China.

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
