Q: How to escape the crowds?

Any suggestions as for how to do something fun and escape the crowds during the incoming holidays in Beijing?

I don't like your chances much if you stay in Beijing. Anything touristy or involving public transport is out.

Stiggs:

I've been in Beijing over National day and the crowds were maddening, you wouldn't want to go to the Forbidden city or something like that if crowds aren't your thing.

Something I like to do though is find a quiet restaurant or bar with outdoor seating, somewhere that isn't in a shopping district so there isn't much reason for the tourists to go there. Sit in the sun, drink beer and people watch, maybe talk to the staff if your Chinese is up to it.

ScotsAlan:

Ha ha. I am doing the nasty bridge on Saturday and Sunday, maybe Monday. Tuesday, off to Shenzhen for 2 nights. Hopefully to meet a couple of guys from ecc and a mad irishman I know who lives there. But we will be urban exploring in Shenzhen. After we cross that bridge :-)

Don't live in tier-1 unless you absolutely have to.

I'm in tier-2 and there are no crowds here, the density is much lower than any tier-1 and we get 99% of every shops/restaurants/bars/stuff you get in tier-1.

Whenever I go to Guangzhou, it's people everywhere, filth and smells and shoving and pushing. I truly want to throw fists around sometimes when I am there.

Fuck tier-1, fuck it to death.
