There are alot of posts like these. " i have nothing to offer my employer yet i want a super high salary" . no offense but if your asking these questions on a forum like this then your screwed. You would have better luck asking " doesn anyone know what this weeks jackpot numbers will be?"

Does anyone know what websites i could find that offer genies? Ill accept just free wishes as well. The genie isnt needed.

I'd generally agree with what Mike said but trying to be slightly helpful I'd suggest expat websites throughout China and job related groups on Couchsurfing. I've seen a couple of jobs in 5 star hotels in China for doormen and customer services representatives for people who are non-Chinese. Last one I saw was in Zhongshan and specifically asked for Indians. My guess would be that they wanted to keep the salary low. I wouldn't expect Chinese hotels to pay good salaries.

mike695ca:

If its asking for indians its for a degrading door man job. There is this bizarre trend in 5 star hotels in china to have Indians dressed in traditional garb holding doors open for them. Thats real high level...

It well might be, Mike.  If the pay is more than what can be earned in India, then I suppose it is.

That was what I thought Mike when I read that particular job advert. Doubt the pay would be great and it would be like going back to the days of the British in India, not particularly good.

Mike695ca's answer is pretty much right on unless you have a killer resume, and in which case you do, then you shouldnt have a problem applying directly to some hotel groups to see who is hiring. But if you dont then you need to have been in China a while to develop relations and get connected.

And his jaded tone is shared by many because these questions always come up, and it is generally from those who dont have a reason to demand a good salaried position except "Foreigners are widely favored, and I am a foreigner, so of course they should want to hire me at a higher salary." That is something many of us have heard a thousand times.

Those of us that have jobs we like and are happy came into them through our own work ethic, whether that is moving here for a company or finding a job here on our own. And while all who live here respect the notion of taking a leap to live and work in another culture, we too often see the few who have a chip on their shoulder thinking that living and working in China is some easy thing.

I hope that you are one of the ones that has the experience and drive to make your career in China so I can wish you the best of luck. But if not. you are going to have to work your way up a company ladder like you would in any country.

You guys are all correct. Too many people assume that they can get high wages because they have some experience in their own country. Coming over to China is a different ball game. To get substantial compensation you need to be in some international hotel in big cities. And in big cities competition is a killer. Even if you have all the necessary paperwork and experience you'll still get screwed because some other foreigner will beat you to that job accepting lower pay. So, if you stay on that high horse, you can either keep hunting for that elusive "good position and best salary" or accept something lower and move on from there. Don't assume that your experience counts a lot because there are others better than you.

bike-gypsy:

you brought up a good point about others accepting the job for lower pay. That is the case exactly right now, and its a bit depressing. Me and a colleague were talking about this the other day. We both came here 5 years ago (he studied in a uni, I was teaching) and last year worked together In a Chinese company. And in our short time here, the competition for jobs needing foreign talent changed drastically. Pay is way to low for actual talent because so many try to "slip underneath" (stole your words scotsalan) with this illusion that a foreigner gives face to a Chinese company.

I think this came up in a question earlier about white monkeys. They loved that shit 15 years ago, but its changing now to where they are seeking real people with appropriate skills. But what I noticed is that foreign start ups are also looking to exploit this with low paying work from foreigners. And if you keep up with the job listings on this site, you can see that many companies have been looking to fill positions unsuccessfully for a long time.

The aspect of China as the land of fortune and opportunity still exists somewhat, but its work... hard work to actually realize. And the influx of those who think it should be a piece of cake...? I liken to the couple of dudes that post questions about how finding girlfriends here. Jobs are real, girls are real, and neither wants to be in bed with a monkey.

Gypsy@ The notion that foreigners can come here and earn big money died 10 years ago. Most Chinese now know that foreigners are just like them, just different skin tones. The sad thing is that many foreigners still think that they can come here for a few months, take a part time job, get paid while traveling and enjoying themselves before they go back to their own countries to start a new job. Many get scammed, and go back empty handed, then they scream "unfair" "liars" "cheaters" etc. Well, first and foremost, they chose to work illegally. If they had spent more time researching the job market here, they'll realize that the government has been clamping down on illegal workers, and slowly tightening the regulations.

I remember an article in China Daily about 7 years ago. It was about a foreigner working in a Shanghai hotel getting his D visa.

But he was General Manager, and it was a 5 star international chain.

I agree with the above answers. You need to be well up the ladder in an international brand to get a good position here. You need them to send you here based on a proven track record.

Yup, China sucks in that regard. It really needs to open it's door more, and let people walk in rather than try to slip underneath.
