If you want to work full-time, then please find a prospective employer and have the X visa converted to a Z visa but that will require paperwork and most likely a trip out-of-country although I have know this to not always be the case in Shanghai.

If you want to work part-time and remain on an X visa, just be aware of the risks that you will be incurring.  I am not saying that it is legally advisable at all but it has known to happen and the risks have also known to be incurred.

One caveat that I do see, however, and perhaps some of the more long-term members of this Board might chime in here, is that the PSB becomes extremely "vigilant" in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, etc., etc., as the year comes to an end and as the holidays approach.  This is usually the moment, meaning over the next two moths, when those working on F and X and L visas are either caught, if caught at all, or advised to lay low, etc., etc.  This is the period of time when LTC's, both licensed and non-licensed are routinely inspected.

DO NOT work with an "X" visa. Complete your studies.
