Q: How to get a new passport while in China?

Australian passport

Going to Hong Kong is what i would like to do to get a new passport. During the summer.

Anybody know any details? Is it possible? How long to wait?

A serious question: how much of a hassle is it to have your residence permit transferred to your new passport? I'm guessing that it will be a drama.

icnif77:

I believe, RP is still valid despite your passport is canceled. You must carry both books with you.

If not, phone call to PSB should give you an answer.

I was in that situation. You don't need to transfer the RP, just carry both passports with you.

Thanks gentlemen. I'm a year away from doing this but I think I will need a new passport for my next RP renewal.

And thanks for the downvote Vicky. Much appreciated

You must have one free page in passport for new RP. Don't go to the Embassy, if you still have free page, because they'll send you away. I had to changed mine last year, because it was full.

It would be wise to consult your embassy/consulate.

Search for the australian consulate nearest your city, and just look under the info regarding passports.

As mentioned by some of the above posters the best thing is to contact your nearest embassy or consulate. Going online seems like a good start.

I have renewed my passport in China by just submitting a complete application to the embassy in Beijing. A bit buerocratic but it works.

Posting Q on eChina board is very good way, me thinks.

I have few Qs of my own, how-ee-ever a bit off topic:

1. Why are Chinese shoelaces a bit longer than shoelaces in the West?

2. Are Chinese egg farmers truthfully honest toward customers, because they're weighting eggs? Before the pricing?

A serious answer is, I believe once you get your new passport you have exactly 10 days to transfer your old residence permit/get a new one.  If you don't complete it within those 10 days you will be fined.
