Q: How to get pianos to the 18th floor?
Having a smoke on my 11th floor balcony, and I can hear kids playing their pianos from above and below.
How do they get their pianos up here?
I would hope they stand it on it's end and load it into the elevator. If some poor bastard had to carry it on his back up all those stairs it would probably kill him.

Pianos are heavy. They have a cast iron frame Too heavy for an elevator.

I know, I helped move one once. There were three of us, the other two were big guys and I'm not. We carried that f**n thing from the back of a truck to the front door of a house and into the living room. Not far but it wrecked us all. How much can an elevator lift anyway? 1000 kg's? May be possible if you can fit the piano in there.

Nope. I have seen baby grands on the 22nd floor. ( edited to change 222nd floor to 22nd).
I've been to a few homes here where they have pianos. Real pianos I mean, not something electric.
Never thought to ask how they got it there but I do know it would have been a massive pain in the ass.
I've actually watched this happen a couple of weeks ago in a new apartment complex. They take out the windows, tie the piano up as well as they possibly can with a very strong rope, get a few strong men and heave it up. Not the most refined method but effective. It's also how some of the windows got in place to start with!
Well, really, it's just like a big empty box. They just fold it all up - so it'll be flat (B♭).
Then, very carefully, carry it up the stairs. They have to be careful, or they'll get cut by A- Sharp edge ... sometimes it's only a little scratch - like A# minor... but sometimes it can be really bad, and they'll get cut by A# major.
Regardless of how heavy it is, or whether they get cut or not - getting it to the top still makes them F-D major!
The owner obviously needs to be home when all of this happens - or they'll be out of key...

Like Andyinshengyang says. Ropes. Although, the couple of times I have been standing on the 23rd floor balcony looking at something float past it has been done using ropes that, although perhaps thicker than many thinner ropes also full of broken threads sticking out.
The odd thing was that I've seen them do this with a sofa that would easily fit in the lift but that day the lift that is allowed for cargo use was out of order. So they rigged ropes from the building and did it that way, as an alternative to just waiting to the next day when the lift was fixed.
