Q: How to handle sexual harassment in China?

There's this associate where I work that keeps talking when looking at my cleavage and make those nasty remarks. Most of the men I met so far were ultra shy, but this one is a misogynist pig. I know I can't punch him in the face, even thought it would teach him a lesson. Can I just file a complain at the police for sexual harassment? It's really frustrating because he is a big client for our company. My boss call him a "necessary evil", but I'm on the verge of cracking.

Just cover up

BTW: My law class covers sexual harassment and sexual discrimination.

Martin1947, when you have nothing intelligent to say, go talk in front of your mirror.

OP: "Martin1947, when you have nothing intelligent to say, go talk in front of your mirror."

That was truly not very nice.

Let's see, China amended the Women 's Protection Law in 2002 to give women a legal cause of action for sexual harassment. The first 3 cases were thrown out. No woman has won such a case to date.

Like I said, just cover up. That is real advise for real people.

However, based upon your response, I shall refrain from any further advice on any of your questions.

That was a much better answer, and I thank you for it.

But what is wrong with the law here? A law is passed, yet it's never been used? I really wish sometime in the near future, those things will change. I won't submit to a pervert and play his game, That would be the same as admitting his winning. Anyways he wouldn't dare and touch me. He could try and get me drunk but he'd hit the floor before I'd get tipsy. At least that's what I heard at the office...

Ah well, I'll need to find a way to cope with the sicko. Thanks for your 2nd answer, Martin1947!

Need evidence, let's say a record of conversation when he talks to u.
And I'm sorry, law in China doesn't really work so well.
Do u have web? If u do and he does too, write something on it, let all friends know, but maybe not with his name on it first, he will learn the lesson, as every Chinese man loves "face" , even he doesn't have one~

Your first answer was totally bogus. The last part you edited made it better though. And no, I will not hit him. What is it with men always wanting to go physical? I'll take Wenna's advices and see if i can get that pig. Thanks Wenna!

Look around. Are the Chinese women showing cleavage?

The Chinese are famous for saying "when in Rome, do as the Romans."

My original answer was "Just cover up." You responded with a personal insult.

If you insist on your right to expose your cleavage, do not complain about visual tours of your grand canyon.

If you were in an Arab country you would wear a Burka. Think about that and quityourgoddamnbitchin.

the chinese women who do show their breats are usually hongers, and taiwanese

Um, nope hippy/edgy.

I've seen plenty of cleavage and short skirts in China, they're local chicks flaunting their stuff, not Taiwanese or from HK.

They actually don't have much to flaunt so the short skirts and legs are to keep you from noticing the stuffed bras where their boyfriend keeps the toilet paper so he does not have to carry a murse(man purse) for his paper and cigarettes.

There are many types of cleavage, Martin. Large ones, smaller ones. But you sound like an old man who didn't see one for years. Maybe you just forgot what they were.

Did I ever say my cleavage was going down to my feet? I didn't give any details, yet you assumed I provoke the pig by the way I was dressing.

You're a sad man, Martin. You're probably thinking when somebody gets mugged, it's the victim's fault for carrying a wallet.

If he is staring at your cleavage, it does not matter the size, you are showing far too much of whatever you have.

Damn it girl this is CHINA. Wake up.

This is China, and so far it's the only one who stared like that at my breasts. What you think is China is a single man, and you.

Is it China, or is it what YOU want China to be?

I have spent many researching cleavage in China. While it is a rare phenomenon - and you are much more likely to find girls and women wearing teeny-tiny shorts that show off the entire legs - sometimes cleavage can be found, like a nugget of pure gold in a dirty river of silt.

I find it easiest to find when you are taking the subway. My favourite tactic is to stand facing the women who are sitting down, perhaps wearing a v-neck top or open blouse. From that angle you have a higher degree of vision, thus are literally in a better position to judge the quality of cleavage. Usually it's smaller than Western standards, but sometimes you can find a real ravine!

The bottom line is this: ladies, if you put it on display, I am going to stare at it. There's nothing perverse about that, it's simple human biology. If you don't want people staring, DON'T PUT IT ON DISPLAY. Simples!

Your company is tolerated with this type of behaviour from a big client and think this is all fun and harmless. Your boss may feel sympathy with you but he's incapable of doing anything else from jeopardize the billion dollar deal. Report to police would do more harm to you and your career in China if this gets out in the news media. If you really want to stay in the company, you need to put up with this type of behavior and dress up appropriately or else get out.

Well if you to show off your cleavage and then making complaints from men that they focus your cleavage is not justice. If you really don't like that someone stare at your cleavage just cover up.

1st write a very detailed letter of complaint to your boss setting forth every instance of sexual harassment including time, date, place, actor and action. Include names of witnesses, if any.
State that the company has 72 hours to provide proof that corrective action has been taken.

At the end of 72 hours, if you are not satisfied, er not happy with your boss' corrective action, take your complaint to the nearest PSB office and demand to file a formal complaint. Do not leave until
a formal complaint has been signed and red chopped with a case number.

Then retain a private lawyer to file a civil suit for violation of China's sexual harassment law.

Next buy a plane ticket home because you will be fired and black listed. The old term is blackballed but of course such a term is highly politically incorrect in a sexual harassment case.

Congratulations you have just become the laughing stock of China. Again, it would be politically incorrect to suggest that you had become the butt of jokes, being sensitive to the nature of your case.

You should anticipate the following defenses:

Her cleavage is so hugh, compared to Chinese women, I just could not avert my eyes.

Her cleavage was so small, in comparison to Chinese women, I was just trying to find it.

She showed her cleavage voluntarily so I voluntarily looked at it.

An all male judicial panel that will probably demand to see the offending cleavage in court and wish to mark it as evidence.

It's amazine how so many people can't handle more complex answers than just "cover up". It's reassuring to know that the vast majority of Chinese people aren't like that. So let me recap : Martin, the Mr-I-Know-More-About-China-Than-Chinese-Themselves, a chauvisnistic pig and a few people here say "cover up". People in the street that just look at me respectfully with a tad bit of curiosity.

FYI, My boss knows he's a pig, but says he's a necessary evil. My boss feels bad for me, but he asks for my patience, because a big deal is soon to be signed.

Rest of China, so far, have no problem with the way I dress.

But then, there's a bitter old man who thinks he's on the same level as Confucius and Lao-Tseu that comes in and preach the Charia in China, and then say I'm the one preaching. Geez, some people are weird. Again, I'm very pleased to see that most of Chinese men aren't pigs, nor like Martin!

I bet you'd stone me if you could, Martin. you'd cover me with a burka, tie me up to a pole then advertise my stoning over the internet. So typical of old narrow minded men. You're the most dangerous kind, because I'm sure deep down, you think you're doing something good. But there's hope for you, Martin! The way you hate me shows that deep down, you know you're not right. But you can't accept that.

You said you lived for 40 years in China, you believe you're the Confucius of the Modern times (or maybe you just saw the movie and got an enlightenment) but all i can see you learned from China is the principle of never losing your face.

Think, Martin. Think hard. Is the China you think you know the real China, or is it the one of your imagination? Because China is not Saudi Arabia, it's not Kuwait, it's not Iran. China is a beautiful country full of nice people.

Haha so typical. You say you forbid her to read my posts, yet she's laughing at me. Is it how it works in YOUR China? She wants to go on the internet, you go in her place and tell her what you see. tsss tsss. Like I said, the worst is that you think you do what is best for others. If you didn't act like that, she would fall and hurt herself.

You think you protect her while you're just chaining her, it's sad, really. Very sad.
