Q: How long on a student visa before I can marry?

I Plan on going to a university in yunnan to get my B.A. in Chinese literature staring this summer.  I also plan on marrying my fiancé while there.

Is there any type of time limit on how long I need to be on a student visa before I can marry a Chinese national?

USA .

i know about the recommended documentation and paperwork that is needed.  Here (in America) if someone gets married shortly after arriving on a student visa, the relationship is looked at very harshly by immigration authorities (looking for visa fraud/contract marriages).  THAT is what I'm worried about.

...although I don't know why anyone would contract marriage to STAY in China.

AdamE:

That makes a lot of sense in America since marriage gets people their green card a lot faster/easier.  Lot of scammers out there getting married just for that, then divorcing a few years later.

In China though you can never have a "green card" as far as I know. You will always bee a foreigner on various types of Visa's.  So this isn't something immigration officals need to worry about with foreigners getting married in China, you getting married isn't gonna allow you to stay here any easier/longer technically speaking.

It is normal for the US authorities to take a very close look at the possibility you mention, and also to the fact that many Chinese Ladies do not marry for love, but for the visa.  And once there, after getting the "permanent" Green Card two years after, divorce the man.

Will this be your first visit to her ?  Have you met her in person previously?  It will be up to you, and the documentation you present in your application for her US visa, to dispel all doubts.  And do submit all papers from the beginning, do not wait until interview time to present anything, it will be too late then.   Please realize that two different departments will look at it, Homeland Security and State.  And what one approves, the other can not reject.  So, use that fact in your favor.

I personally know many "White" guys who married chinese girls for money and support and divorced them after they are done getting benefits from them.

I have visited her twice before.  The month of August 2011, and July and August of this year.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
