Q: How long until China has clean drinking water?

Eventually, China will make the effort and put the money to get clean drinking water directly from the tap. The questions is: how long is it going to take?

Is there one city in China where it's relatively safe to drink water from the tap? Where the pipes were changed?

Well, let's see....it's been arguably, 5000 years or so since China turned on the lights. There is not a safe place to drink directly from the tap as of this writing so I would guess that it will happen in........ah, heck.....it's not a priority.

Parts of the 'glorious' Eurozone still don't have clean drinking water so my guess is that you'll be waiting a while yet.

I don't see the need for the expense. Bottled water works and individuals can incorporate filters to get one tap (or more if you desire) up to drinking standard.

The expense of rolling out drinking standard water to every home in China would be incredible.

How long will it take them to figure out a way to make a profit from clean water?  Oh, wait, they did that with bottled water already.  I would say, don't hold your breath, but in China that might be a healthier option than actually breathing.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
