Q: How low are you willing to stoop be sat on public transportation?
As soon as the doors open all humanity is lost.
I can't be bothered now. I wait at the back of the line for a place to squeeze into when it's settled a bit.
What's funny to me are the people who fight tooth and nail for a seat, leaving the elderly and small children standing only to get off at the next stop.
At least I don't see this happen too often.

What I've noticed over the years, and that has always surprised me, is the instant swap they do for a seat.
As soon as the person's butt raises from the chair, BAM, another person already sat down, all in a fraction of a second. No time to react. Didn't see it coming? Called dibs? Too late. You stand up like a dumb peon. Game over.
Seriously, it's just mind blowing.
It must be like New York to be in some of the larger Chinese cities. I can only relate to two years living in Nanning. When traveling by bus, I have never seen an older person having to stand. The younger ones always give up their seats to the older generation. There is a great respect for the older folk. As it should be. Franck3

Sure, it often happens in my part of the world, but it's just as likely that an older person will have to walk almost to the back of a bus before someone will bother giving up a seat.. so, statistically, that'd be about... 20% of the population has that 'great respect for the older generation'... the younger generation here are pretty rude!

I get blown away at just how violent some of the older people are, shoulder-barging their way through to get that seat... sheesh - if you can do that, then you really don't need the seat, do you???

Sometimes, if they are leaning on one of the bars in the subway, and you want to pass to get out, they wont move their arm a single millimeter for anyone to pass (Chinese or foreign).
They usually can't budge me so even if they tried to push and shove me it wouldn't work...

The worst I will do is use my elbows and long arms to keep people from trying to butt past me. I don't push or shove people in front of me to get on the train or the bus, but I will defend my spot in line. If I don't even the old grannies and laborers will eat you alive during rush hours. I've had little old ladies and 20 year old girls half my size that could easily push me down and out of the way, so I've become more aggressive to hold the line, but protect those in front of me.
If I'm taking the bus I'm in no rush, so I won't go to any length to board a bus or take a seat. I can wait for the next bus or stand.
Honestly I love to complain about China as much as the next ... complainer but the bus riders here are generally polite, especially to the older people. It's almost a contest to see who can give their seat to the old lady who just got on. Same with a mother and young child.

One sweet little old lady hit me in the chest with her umbrella (hard enough for me to stagger back) because I didn't move out of her way fast enough.
