Q: How many oranges is too many?

Oranges are the cheapest fruit, at least around here, so they're the fruit I eat most. I've had people tell me that eating too many oranges is bad for you, but they don't say why it is bad for you, or just how many are bad for you. So is there some sort of magical number? Does it vary from person to person? It's not like I'm going to overdose on vitamin C if I eat a few oranges a day.

Oranges are high in Vit C and Potassium, both good for you. There is the acid thing, which isn't a bad thing unless your stomach produces extra acid. The other thing is excessive Vit C can cause kidney stones. And I know last summer when my kidneys were failing, they took me off of oranges because of the potassium. So as long as your kidneys are healthy and your stomach doesn't over produce absorbic? acid, chow away.

Just brush or chew gum regularly as the acid from the fruit eats away the enamel on your teeth

and when you get the runs next time it might be the oranges this time

Jnusb, I love OJ, and also do oranges.  I probably buy 6 every day, peel them off, separate in slices like tangerines and keep them inside refrigerator in plastic box.  And I eat 2 or 3 slices every time I am in the kitchen, and I am still alive.  My grandma used to do that for all grandkids, and I loved it and have kept the practice.

So, if you eat just a few each day, when you hear you will develop stomach ulcers, or have tooth decay, just say thanks and continue having oranges.  No big deal at all.

The following is from a site called The Vitamin Source:

So Can You Overdose on Vitamin C?

Assuming oral ingestion, Vitamin C has an Upper Limit (UL) of 2000 mg, meaning that consumption beyond that point has the possibility to bring about the symptoms of an overdose. Overconsumption of vitamin C most commonly results in the following:

• Nausea

• Diarrhea

Considering the amount of vitamin C in common foods, this level is nearly impossible to reach without supplementation. For example, an apple has about 8.5 mg of vitamin C, an avocado has about 20 mg and a cup of blackberries has about 30 mg. So unless you’re eating 250 apples a day you probably don’t have to worry.

Where we run into the potential for an overdose is with supplementation. The popular supplement Emergen-C contains 1000 mg per serving and other competing products contain similarly high amounts. It’s very easy to exceed the UL of 2,000 mg a day through supplementation.

Despite the upper limit of 2,000 mg, however, symptoms generally don’t occur at intake levels below 4,000 mg a day, and even then, it’s generally just mild nausea and diarrhea.

Intravenous doses of vitamin C have been shown to be safe up to 120 g/day, or 120,000 mg.

I would also add that, as teachers, we have a special responsibility to our students to always be as healthy as possible so that we can teach them as well as possible. Eating oranges and/or drinking orange juice is/are very helpful to that end. There are other things that a teacher could do to remain healthy, too. For instance, a teacher ought to limit his or her intake of alcohol, avoid smoking, and get plenty of sleep every night, even if that means setting an early curfew for himself or herself.

Like pretty much everything else here, "Oranges are bad for you BECAUSE".

There's probably no number at all, just some... urban legend or something.

I just wrote a huge chunk of ranting, but deleted it, because, you know, who cares.

I am not sure about how many oranges is too many. My brother in law ate too many and developed an allergy to citrus fruits and now he can't have any. So there is definitely  an amount that is too much.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
