I'm going to be leaving China soon after my trip in the south, and I was wondering if there was a limit of RMB I can take back with me...or even in for that matter. I came to China with 17,000 RMB in my carry-on without even wondering if there was a limit...

The best is change your money before you leave China.. into USD, euros or pounds... most banks currently abroad don't accept rmb.
Well customs have their own limits, but as far as China is concerned.... you can bring as much in as you want, but good luck trying to get it out.
My bank provided me with this information. Hope it helps.
RMB20,000 cash can be carried out of China. Up to USD$5,000 equivalent can be carried out of China in foreign currency (cash). Amounts greater than US$5000 and up to US$10000 will require a permit for Taking Foreign Currency Out of Customs Territory issued by the FX designated bank. A Permit for an amount over US$10000 needs to be applied from SAFE directly.
You should spend your leftover money to buy gifts for your family members.
This is uncomfirmed by me with regulators, but reputable online sources say that Chinese nationals can only transfer out $50,000 in cash each year, per person. This means that husband and wife can transfer out $50,000 each or $100,000USd each year or $200,000 in 13 months. This is a lot and equivalent to 1.26 Million RMB every 24 months. I don't think too many will be doing this. I have never heard of a limit for foreigners to transfer money out but one might exist. I am sure global banks like HSBC or Citi would have answers for you.
Chinese will not let you leave with money easily.so my advice is to send it to your bank account abroad and then leave the country
