It can't. A Z visa is a single entry visa that then allows you to get a residence permit, which is normally valid for 1 year, but in some circumstances more.

Then depending on your contract, etc, you extend the residence permit each year based on the length of validity of your work permit/FEC.

Put a few more details on here and you'll get more detailed replies.

ScotsAlan:

Yes, the resident permit can be extended if your employer gives you a new contract.

But as I understand it, after 5 years on a continuous contract the tax rules change.

There are also subtle differences between a work permit an an FEC. Very subtle differences. So subtle in fact, I have no clue what they are.

But yeah... basically, if you have not converted your Z into an RP you are shafted anyway.

Sichuan and Shangdong province 5 years in a row max, must change companies before the 5th year.

All other provinces can be renewed as many times as you wish as long as you get the contract renewed and a few BS surprises will pop up along the way.

expatlife26:

That still seems really wrong to me...they have real international firms in Chengdu you know?

You think they're going to tell GE or Microsoft "Sorry guys your senior manager has been here 5 years now we're sure he has nothing left to teach us...he has to go home now."?

I don't think so. Are you sure that's happened to anyone...that isn't kind of a questionable ESL type?

Yeah happened to our engineer friend, we studied at the same university and came to China together, one day last year August he told me his Huawei position couldn't be renewed nor his visa RP due to the fact that he worked 5 years in a row in Qingdao at Huawei. The law is out there. I think one guy said it best that some companies will barrow a name and legal school or company to get you an RP from them for one year and then go back to the correct company and the RP clock restarts again in those provinces.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
